New turbo or rebuild: two very different options for the wide range of Range Rover engines

All turbos listed in this Range Rover collection are new parts sold on a straightforward sale basis, with no old unit to return. This covers every diesel engine referenced here: the V6 2.7 (code 276DT), the V8 3.6 (code 368DT), the V6 3.0 (codes 306DT and 306DDTX) and the V8 4.4 (codes AJD-V8, 448DT and SDV8). Rebuilding your own existing unit is not available within this range: if your original turbo is still physically intact and you would prefer to have it reconditioned rather than replaced, that option is not offered here.

Two generations of V8 – references that do not cross over

The V8 4.4 is a prime example of the identification pitfall: the code AJD-V8 (older generation, developed in partnership with PSA) and the code 448DT (architecture developed in-house by Jaguar Land Rover) share the same engine capacity but have no turbo parts in common. On the 4.4 SDV8 340 hp, OEM references such as LR049593 or CK5Q6K682AB are not compatible with the references for the 4.4 TDV8 AJD-V8, such as LR022790 or LR049589. Reading the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to select the correct turbo reference.

Causes of failure and key checks before fitting

On Range Rover diesel engines, turbo failures are frequently linked to insufficient lubrication or degraded oil, particularly on the 2.7 TDV6 276DT, which is well known for oil feed line clogging issues. Fouling of the EGR circuit and DPF can also cause air ingestion or overheating of the bearings. Common symptoms include: a sharp whistling noise under acceleration, blue or black smoke, a noticeable loss of power, and in some cases the engine going into limp mode. Fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause of the original failure will invariably lead to another rapid breakdown.
