Symptoms of a failing turbo on the Mercedes Sprinter 316 CDI 156
On the Sprinter fitted with the OM642 engine, a turbo nearing the end of its life typically shows itself through a loss of power under acceleration, an unusual whistling noise from the engine bay, blue or black exhaust smoke, and sometimes an engine warning light on the dashboard. These signs generally point to excessive play in the CHRA, an oil leak into the intake, or insufficient boost pressure. On a heavily used commercial vehicle like the Sprinter, these symptoms often appear after long runs under load or driving cycles where the engine is switched off immediately after intensive use.

Exchange basis and warranty for this turbo
This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: return of the old turbo is required in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, and it is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so the Sprinter is not left off the road. The turbo comes with a 12-month parts warranty, subject to fitting by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over several instalments, up to 10 instalments.
Fitting advice for the Sprinter OM642
Before installing the turbo, check the oil circuit, hoses and air intake for any contamination or blockage that could prematurely damage the new turbo. Turbo failure on this engine is often caused by inadequate lubrication, incorrect oil grade or missed oil changes, a clogged air filter, or a faulty intercooler. When starting up for the first time, make sure to prime the oil circuit before the initial start to ensure immediate lubrication of the bearings. Allowing proper warm-up and cool-down periods will also help extend the life of the turbo on the Sprinter 316 CDI.
