Why does the turbo fail on the BMW Série 3 335i?
On the BMW Série 3 335i, the N54B30A block runs two turbochargers mounted in parallel, each feeding three cylinders. The turbo compatible with reference 49131-07160 corresponds to the cylinders 1 to 3 position. On this twin-turbo petrol engine, the most common causes of failure are insufficient lubrication (degraded oil, missed oil changes, low oil pressure), a clogged air filter allowing particle ingestion, a split hose or air fitting upstream of the turbo, or prolonged operation under excessive boost. Excessive shaft play, whistling or knocking noises on deceleration, loss of power, or blue smoke from the exhaust are all tell-tale signs of a worn turbo on this engine.

This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: the old turbo must be returned, in accordance with the Terms and Conditions. The return is only required after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so your vehicle is not left off the road. The part carries a 12-month parts warranty, subject to fitting by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over multiple instalments, up to 10 instalments.
Fitting advice for the N54B30A engine
Before fitting the new turbo to the 335i, it is advisable to check the condition of the oil circuit (feed and return hoses), to ensure there are no leaks or cracks in the air hoses between the turbos, the intercooler and the intake, and to confirm that the air intake and air filter are clean. On start-up, the turbo should be primed with oil before the first start to ensure immediate lubrication of the bearings and to protect the service life of the new part.
