The Mercedes Vito gearbox can suffer from a range of problems: low oil level, worn linkage, contaminated lubricant… Every generation and every engine variant of the Mercedes Vito can be affected, with symptoms ranging from difficulty selecting gears and crunching noises to a burning smell and gears jumping out. Prompt repair is essential, and sometimes the gearbox must be replaced with a reconditioned exchange unit. EDEN BOITES is here to help.
Identifying the gearbox on my Mercedes Vito
The Vito Panel Van is fitted with four-cylinder diesel engines: the 1,749 cm³ unit is paired with front-wheel drive, while the 1,950 cm³ unit drives the rear wheels (or all four wheels as an option). The Vito 110 CDi gearbox is a 6-speed manual of the FSG 350 type. On the Vito 114, front-wheel-drive models use the 6-speed manual FSG 350, while all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive versions receive a 9-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. The Vito Panel Van 116 and 119, in rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive form, are paired with the 9G-Tronic. The electric eVito Panel Van is powered by a 25 kW motor with an estimated range of 150 km and a reduction ratio of 1:13.205.
The Vito Mixto is available with the 1,749 cm³ and 1,950 cm³ engines and all three transmission types. The Vito 110d in front-wheel-drive uses the FSG 350 gearbox, while the 114 in all-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive and the 116, 119 and 124 in rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive receive the 9G-Tronic. The Vito Tourer, meanwhile, is offered with two four-cylinder diesel engines ranging from 102 to 204 hp: the 6-speed manual FSG 350 equips the 110 and 114 in front-wheel-drive, with the 9G-Tronic automatic fitted to the 114, 116, 119 and 124 in rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. The eVito Tourer produces 150 kW with a ratio of 1:13.215.
The Vito has, however, had a long career, and its gearbox has not always been the 6-speed manual FSG 350 or the 9G-Tronic. The first generation, the w638 (1996 to 2003), received a 5-speed manual on the 230 TD (98 hp) and the 220 CDi (122 hp), while the petrol 280 (174 hp) came as standard with a 4-speed automatic. The second generation, the w639 (2003 to 2010), fitted the 109 and 111 CDi with a 6-speed manual, the 112 CDi with a 5-speed manual, and the 115 CDi with either a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic. The safest approach is always to supply the code stamped on the gearbox itself. To understand how each component works, see how a gearbox works.
Who to contact if you have a Mercedes Vito gearbox problem?
When a transmission fault occurs, the first step should be to take the vehicle to a garage or call out a professional: working on a gearbox is always complex and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. If the oil level is too low, a simple top-up may be all that is needed; an oil change is required if the lubricant is heavily contaminated. On a first-generation Vito, the mechanic will also check the condition of the gear linkage and adjust it if necessary. On the w639, they will inspect synchromesh wear, oil quality, selector operation and shaft condition. Removing and stripping the gearbox is only a last resort, carried out to clean, inspect and assess each component.
Always make sure the repairer holds the necessary qualifications: a misdiagnosis or poor reassembly can cause far greater damage. The type and grade of oil can vary from one engine variant to another, so this must be taken into account at every oil change and top-up.

Frequently asked questions
How do I identify the gearbox on my Mercedes Vito?
The most reliable method is to read the code stamped on the gearbox. You can also use the generation (w638, w639), the engine variant and the transmission type as a guide.
Which gearbox does the Vito 114 use?
In front-wheel drive, the 6-speed manual FSG 350; in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the 9-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox.
Does the gearbox always need to be replaced when it fails?
No. A top-up, an oil change or a linkage adjustment is sometimes all that is needed. Replacement is only considered after a thorough diagnosis.
What is the difference between a used unit and an exchange unit?
A used unit is the most cost-effective option; an exchange unit provides a fully reconditioned and reassembled gearbox, as good as new.
