Suzuki Vitara and Grand Vitara: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Suzuki Vitara and Grand Vitara: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Suzuki Vitara and Grand Vitara: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

The gearbox of the Suzuki Vitara — and its bigger sibling, the Grand Vitara — is a critical component in this rugged, characterful SUV. Bold off-road styling, a comfortable cabin, solid safety credentials: the Vitara has a great deal going for it, but it is not immune to transmission failure. This guide covers everything you need to identify the symptoms, recognise your gearbox, and approach a repair with confidence through EDEN BOITES.

Gearbox problems: what are the warning signs?

Spotting the early warning signs is the first step. On a manual gearbox, watch out for difficulty moving the gear lever, crunching on every gearchange, juddering, gears jumping out, or an oil leak. On an automatic gearbox, the signs are more likely to be lurching on start-off, under acceleration or during gearchanges, rumbling noises, or incorrect gear selection. Also check when the next oil change is due — the problem can sometimes be traced to dirty oil. To understand both technologies, see our dedicated comparison guide.

Vitara gearboxes through the generations

Whether Vitara or Grand Vitara, the name depends on the generation, and the technical changes between versions mean a gearbox from one will not necessarily fit another.

The first Vitara (from 1988)

This compact 4x4 broke into the market in 1988 and the following year was rebadged as the Chevrolet Tracker for the United States. The petrol range comprised a 1.6 L 97 bhp unit and a 2.0 V6 AWD with 136 bhp, both paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox (BVM5). In diesel, the BVM5 also featured on the 1.9 TD AWD with 75 bhp and the 2.0 TD with 87 bhp.

The Grand Vitara (from 1998)

The first-generation Grand Vitara arrived in 1998 with 2.0 to 2.5 L petrol and diesel engines producing between 85 and 144 bhp, all paired with a BVM5. In 2006, the range expanded: the 1.9 DDiS with 129 bhp and the 2.0 with 140 bhp retained the BVM5, while the 2.7 V6 with 188 bhp and the 3.2 V6 with 229 bhp moved to a 5-speed automatic gearbox (BVA5), and the 2.2 L petrol with 163 bhp received a BVA4. In 2008, the 2.4 L versions (166 and 169 bhp) were offered with either a BVA4 or a BVM5, the 2.7 with 185 bhp with a BVM5 or BVA5, and the 3.2 with 232 bhp with a BVA5; the 1.9 DDiS with 129 bhp kept its faithful BVM5.

The new Vitara (from 2014)

The 2014 generation focused on 1.6 L petrol and diesel engines: the automatic gearbox gained 6 speeds, while the manual retained 5 speeds in petrol form and offered 6 speeds in diesel. The 2018 facelift introduced the BoosterJet turbo engines ranging from 1.0 to 1.4 L (112 to 140 bhp): the gearbox options were a BVA6, a BVM5, or a BVM6. The 1.4 BoosterJet 48V hybrid powertrain was paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Dealing with a gearbox failure

The gearbox is a heavy, delicate component whose design varies from one version to the next. Always entrust any work to a professional mechanic. Working from the symptoms you describe, they will carry out a thorough diagnosis: first ruling out the clutch, then checking gear tooth wear, assessing the condition of the oil and looking for leaks, and inspecting the linkage, mountings, and synchromesh. On an automatic gearbox, a faulty sensor or control unit can cause incorrect gear selection; reprogramming or removal may then be necessary.

The right gearbox at the right price for your Vitara

If a replacement is recommended, you can source the part yourself to keep control of your budget — provided you use a reliable specialist. EDEN BOITES offers Vitara and Grand Vitara gearboxes as used units and on an exchange basis, each assessed by our technicians. Where a reference is not in stock, a reconditioned gearbox is an excellent alternative: the damaged gearbox is fully rebuilt in our workshops. Browse our gearboxes, the Suzuki page, and our guides on the Grand Vitara and the Suzuki Jimny.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Vitara gearbox fit all models?

No. Different powertrains and generations require different designs: a BoosterJet gearbox cannot replace one from an older 1.9 diesel. The exact reference is essential.

How do I know whether my gearbox is manual or automatic?

The engine and year already tell you a great deal, but the code stamped on the unit itself remains the most reliable reference.

Could the problem simply be the oil?

Yes. Dirty oil or a level that is too low can make gear selection difficult. An oil change sometimes resolves the issue before any dismantling is needed.

What warranty do you offer?

Our gearboxes come with a warranty of up to 24 months, with the option to pay in up to 10 instalments.
