The gearbox of the IVECO Daily 70C is built to handle heavy loads day in, day out. Italian manufacturer IVECO took over production of the Daily in 1982, a van that had already been on the market four years earlier under Fiat V.I. By 2018, the Daily had passed the three-million-units-sold mark worldwide, before entering its third generation in 2019. Robust by nature, the 70C is not immune to failure, however — here is how to maintain and repair its gearbox.
The 70C: a heavyweight in the light commercial sector
What makes the IVECO 70C special
The 70C offers a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of up to seven tonnes and is available as a panel van, chassis cab, or double cab. The double-cab version features twin rear wheels for better weight distribution and up to six wheelbase options, bringing the overall vehicle length to more than ten metres. Like most Daily models, the 70C uses rear-wheel drive: engine torque is delivered to the rear axle wheels.
A manual gearbox is fitted to the vast majority of models — six-speed on the 3.0 70C21 3450 or 3750, for example. The new IVECO Daily Hi-Matic, meanwhile, receives an eight-speed automatic gearbox capable of changing gear in under 200 milliseconds; it can be found, among others, on the IVECO 70C18A8P.
Preventing failure
Good driving habits are the first line of defence for protecting the transmission. The driver should remain aware of their surroundings in order to anticipate manoeuvres and avoid harsh acceleration or braking. Renowned for its robustness, the 70C does have its limits: it is important not to exceed seven tonnes of load, as doing so risks damaging the gearbox.
Dealing with a faulty 70C gearbox
Checking the transmission oil level
An insufficient level or degraded oil impairs the lubrication of components and accelerates wear. To check the level, drive for a few minutes cycling through all gears to distribute the oil, then locate the dipstick, which is generally found behind the engine compartment. Remove it, wipe it with a clean cloth, reinsert it, then withdraw it again to check that the level is as close as possible to the upper mark; top up if necessary using a funnel.
Inspecting the gearbox in detail
A thorough inspection requires removing the gearbox. The procedure involves several steps:
- remove the gear lever after detaching its gaiter and unscrewing the console;
- free the propshaft by loosening its mounting bolts;
- detach the gearbox from its rubber mounts;
- release the clutch slave cylinder by unscrewing it;
- remove the bellhousing fixings, then carefully ease the gearbox away.
This removal requires specialist tools and a methodical approach: it is best left to a qualified professional.
Repairing or replacing the 70C gearbox
Only a professional can confirm whether your gearbox needs repairing or replacing. If replacement is required, a reconditioned unit is an economical and environmentally friendly solution: each gearbox is stripped, cleaned, inspected, and any faulty parts are replaced. Browse the gearbox collection and then the IVECO collection, armed with the reference of your old gearbox. To compare with similar models, see our guides on the IVECO 35C gearbox and the IVECO 35S gearbox, or our general IVECO gearbox guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum load the IVECO 70C can carry?
Its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating reaches seven tonnes. Exceeding this limit places excessive strain on the gearbox and can cause damage.
What gearbox does the 70C use?
A six-speed manual gearbox on the majority of versions, or an eight-speed Hi-Matic automatic gearbox on more recent models.
Is removing the gearbox something anyone can do?
It requires specialist tools and know-how. For a reliable and safe result, it is best entrusted to a qualified mechanic.
