Maintenance and Repair of the IVECO 35S Gearbox
Maintenance and Repair of the IVECO 35S Gearbox Maintenance and Repair of the IVECO 35S Gearbox

The gearbox of the IVECO 35S deserves particular attention. This model belongs to the large family of light commercial vehicles from the Italian IVECO group, itself descended from the Turin-based manufacturer Fiat. Robust and versatile, the 35S owes much of its reliability to its transmission. This guide explains how it works, the best habits for everyday use, and the key steps for maintaining and replacing it.

Understanding the IVECO 35S Gearbox

How it works

The gearbox transfers engine power to the drive wheels by adapting torque to the demands of the output shaft. This can be achieved via front-wheel drive (front wheels driven), rear-wheel drive (rear wheels driven), as on the IVECO 35S11 V12 3.5T, or four-wheel drive when torque is distributed to all wheels.

In terms of gearbox type, the manual version puts the driver in full control of gear changes. It comes in a five-speed configuration on the IVECO Châssis Double Cabine 3.5T 35S14D and a six-speed on the IVECO Daily Plus Châssis-Cabine 4x2 35S15. The automatic version is fitted to models such as the IVECO 2.3 33S11 AGILE.

Looking after your gearbox day to day

Preventing faults starts with smooth driving. The manual gearbox, which demands more of the driver, calls for a few simple precautions:

  • avoid resting your hand on the gear lever, as this can cause premature wear to the selector forks;
  • select neutral when stationary, at traffic lights or in traffic jams;
  • keep your foot off the clutch pedal, even lightly, to protect the thrust bearing;
  • don't rush gear changes, to allow the synchromesh to do its job.

With an automatic gearbox, always ensure the vehicle has come to a complete stop before engaging park or reverse.

Spotting a Failing Gearbox

Several signs point to a transmission in trouble: unusual noises (whining, grinding, rattling), resistance when moving the gear lever, gears jumping out or disengaging, or a general drop in vehicle performance. At the first sign of concern, a diagnosis by a qualified mechanic will identify the exact cause before the problem gets worse.

Maintaining and Repairing the IVECO 35S Gearbox

Checking the transmission fluid

A fault often stems from low transmission fluid, sometimes caused by a leak beneath the vehicle. Regularly checking the fluid level and condition will help you decide whether a fluid change is needed. This is more frequent on an automatic gearbox, generally recommended every 60,000 kilometres, whereas a manual gearbox typically only needs a fluid change from around 250,000 kilometres.

Where to find a replacement gearbox?

If the diagnosis confirms that the gearbox needs to be replaced entirely, you are not obliged to buy one from a garage. Browse the gearbox collection and the IVECO collection to find the right reference. Every reconditioned gearbox is stripped down, cleaned, inspected and put through multiple quality checks. All you need to do is note the reference number of your old gearbox and check that it matches the product specification sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive on the 35S?

With front-wheel drive, torque is delivered to the front wheels; with rear-wheel drive, as on the 35S11 V12 3.5T, it is delivered to the rear wheels.

How often should the gearbox fluid be changed?

Approximately every 60,000 kilometres for an automatic gearbox, and from around 250,000 kilometres for a manual gearbox, depending on use.

Can my own gearbox be reconditioned if the reference is unavailable?

Yes. When the part is out of stock, EDEN BOITES will recondition your gearbox and replace any faulty components.
