Reconditioned IVECO 35C Gearbox

35C 2.3, 3.0 or 2.8: three diesels, but only two types of manual gearbox — and the number of ratios cannot be deduced from the engine capacity

On the IVECO 35C produced from 1999 to 2019, the transmission is exclusively manual: no automatic gearbox, no automated manual. The distinction that truly matters is the number of ratios. The 3.0 Multijet is always fitted with a 6-speed manual. The 2.8 TD can be equipped with either 5 or 6 speeds depending on the configuration. The 2.3 Multijet, the most common engine in the 35C, also covers both variants — and this is where identification becomes tricky: two distinct gearboxes exist for this same diesel, and the engine capacity or year alone are not enough to determine which.

The engine code: the only reliable reference for the 2.3 and 2.8

For the 2.3 Multijet, two engine codes are referenced: F1AE0481 and F1AE3481. Each can correspond to either a 5- or 6-speed gearbox depending on the version. For the 2.8 TD, four codes exist — 8140.43, 8140.43C, 8140.43R, 8140.43S — and the same ambiguity applies. The 3.0 Multijet, by contrast, is more consistent: codes F1CE0481A, F1CE0481F and F1CE0481H are associated with the 6-speed only. This code is stamped on the block and remains the essential starting point for selecting the correct gearbox reference.

Two purchasing options depending on the condition of your current gearbox

Gearboxes for the 35C are available on an exchange basis or, in certain cases, as a rebuild of the customer's own unit. The rebuild option — where the gearbox sent in is reconditioned and then returned to the same customer — can be the right choice when the unit has specific characteristics that are difficult to match exactly, particularly on certain older versions of the 2.8 TD where production runs vary. Exchange remains the fastest solution for the 2.3 and 3.0 Multijet, which are better covered in terms of available references.
