IVECO 35C: three engine families, nine engine codes, two numbers of ratios — why the 2.3 Multijet is not a single gearbox

The most common mistake with the 35C is to think in terms of engine capacity alone. A 2.3 Multijet can take either a 5-speed or a 6-speed manual gearbox depending on the year of manufacture and, above all, the engine code: F1CE0481A, F1CE0481F and F1CE0481H do not necessarily share the same gearbox, and none of these codes is interchangeable with F1AE0481 or F1AE3481, which correspond to other development stages of the same 2.3 block. The 2.8 TD covers the period 1999–2007 with the codes 8140.43, 8140.43C, 8140.43R and 8140.43S — four variants for a single engine capacity, each potentially corresponding to a distinct 5- or 6-speed gearbox. The engine code stamped on the front of the block is the only reliable starting point for identifying the exact part.

What sets the 3.0 Multijet apart from the other two families

Unlike the 2.3 and the 2.8, the 3.0 Multijet is fitted with a 6-speed gearbox throughout its entire production run in the 35C. This consistency simplifies identification for this engine, but it does not remove the need to check the year: the 3.0 evolved between its early versions and its post-2011 variants, with different ratios and gearbox output configurations. A 35C fitted with the 3.0 and used intensively in urban conditions (frequent stops, heavy loads) often shows premature wear on the 1st- and 2nd-gear synchromesh rings — a symptom of repeated clutch slip under load.

Two supply options available depending on the condition of the original gearbox

For the 35C, two options are available: supply of a reconditioned unit in exchange for the return of your old one, or reconditioning of your own gearbox, which is then returned to you. This second option may be the right choice if the gearbox has a known service history and an intact casing — particularly for 2.8 TD versions, where exchange units are becoming harder to find. In either case, the engine code and the vehicle's first registration date remain the two essential pieces of information needed to confirm compatibility before placing an order.
