On the 2.3 Multijet, two manual gearboxes coexist in the 35C range between 2006 and 2019: a 5-speed version and a 6-speed version. No automated manual or automatic gearbox is offered with this engine, so the choice comes down to these two manual variants – and confusing one for the other at the point of replacement is surprisingly common.

F1AE0481 and F1AE3481: two engine codes, two possible configurations

Both referenced engine codes — F1AE0481 and F1AE3481 — span the entire production period, yet they do not always come paired with the same gearbox. The power output and vehicle configuration (chassis cab, panel van, double cab) directly influence the number of speeds fitted at the factory. Going by the model year alone is not enough to identify the gearbox: it is the gearbox identification plate, cross-referenced with the engine code stamped on the block, that confirms which of the two families is actually fitted to the vehicle.

Known weakness on the 2.3 Multijet

The 2.3 Multijet is a workhorse engine: heavy urban use, with frequent cold starts and a fully laden vehicle, puts considerable strain on the synchromesh rings of the lower gears. Difficulty selecting first and second gear when cold, along with gear-engagement noise after high mileage, are the most commonly reported symptoms on these gearboxes, whether in 5-speed or 6-speed form.
