IVECO 35C: a robust 2.3 Multijet for heavy use, and an ageing 2.8 TD with well-documented weaknesses

On the IVECO 35C, engine longevity depends as much on the engine variant as on how the vehicle is used. The naturally aspirated 2.8 TD (engine codes 8140.43C and 8140.43R) is an older-generation unit — reliable under light loads but prone to head gasket and injection pump problems as it ages, particularly on vehicles used for short runs or urban work. Replacing the bare engine is often necessary before the mechanical structure deteriorates beyond usable condition.

2.3 Multijet: five engine codes, one displacement, very different generations

The 2.3 Multijet covers the bulk of 35C production between 2006 and 2019, but behind that single name lie five distinct engine codes. The F1AE0481B and F1AE0481GA blocks correspond to pre-2012 versions. The F1AE3481B represents an intermediate revision, while F1AGL411G and F1AGL411L are fitted to post-Euro 6 models. These units are not interchangeable: mechanical interfaces, mountings and injection compatibility all differ. Fitting a replacement without first checking the engine code stamped on the block risks an incompatibility at installation. On high-mileage versions, recurring symptoms include persistent blue smoke, loss of compression and abnormal oil consumption — typically caused by worn piston rings or valve guides.

3.0 Multijet: a single engine code, a top-of-the-range powertrain

The 3.0 Multijet, engine code F1CFL4117, is the most powerful engine in the 35C range. It is fitted to maximum-payload versions and the most demanding configurations. This unit is less common, which makes identifying the engine code all the more important before placing any order. As with the other engine variants, only the bare engine is offered here; ancillaries (turbo, alternator, starter motor) are not included and should be reused or replaced according to their condition.
