Hyundai IX35: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Hyundai IX35: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Hyundai IX35: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

The Hyundai ix35 gearbox is fitted to a 2010-generation SUV that is athletic and versatile, equally at home in town or on challenging roads. Temperamental synchros, a hesitant control unit, oil leaks, noise or stiff gear changes – none of these faults is beyond repair. This guide helps you identify the gearbox in your ix35 and get it back in working order.

What type of gearbox does my ix35 have?

The ix35 is simply the second generation of the Tucson, sharing the same basic architecture with a modern twist. The manual gearbox offers five or six speeds on the front-wheel-drive petrol variants – the 1.6 GDI 135 hp and 2.0 163 hp – while the 6-speed manual is fitted to the 2.0 CRDi 4WD, 2.0 CRDi FWD and 1.7 CRDi FWD 117 hp diesels.

On the automatic side, a six-speed Shiftronic is fitted to the 2.0 FWD 163 hp and 2.4 Dual CVVT 176 hp, as well as the 2.0 CRDi 4WD 134 hp diesel with a 6-speed automatic. After the 2013 facelift, the Nu 2.0 (164 hp) and Theta II 2.4 (182 hp) received a six-speed torque-converter automatic with electronic lock-up. The Tucson name returned from 2015, retaining these transmissions. As the same engine can be paired with different gearboxes, always check the exact reference.

Who should I turn to if the gearbox fails?

Depending on its design, the gearbox can display a variety of symptoms. A worn synchro makes gear changes noisy; oil changes left too long apart allow the lubricant to become contaminated, so it can no longer do its job. Repairs cannot be based on guesswork alone: only a qualified mechanic can carry out a thorough diagnosis and confirm whether removal is necessary. You are free to choose your own repairer – a main dealer, fast-fit centre or local garage.

The mechanic will provide a quote before stripping the unit down. You can source the part yourself and pay only for the labour; an oil change – whether for a manual or automatic gearbox – is a standard part of any repair.

The best value for money for your ix35

Once you have identified the gearbox and found your mechanic, all that remains is to place your order. EDEN BOITES tests every unit before it goes into stock: wear, performance and overall condition are all checked. Rebuilding remains an option if the reference suited to your ix35 is temporarily out of stock.

Frequently asked questions

Do the ix35 and the Tucson share the same platform? Yes – the ix35 is the second generation of the Tucson.

Which automatic gearbox is fitted to the ix35? A six-speed Shiftronic, depending on the engine.

Does one engine always mean one gearbox? No – always check the exact reference, as several gearboxes may be compatible.

Can I supply the part to the garage myself? Yes – you then pay only for the labour.

Why choose EDEN BOITES?

Replacing the gearbox on your Hyundai ix35 need not mean excessive expense – that is the whole point of the EDEN BOITES exchange programme. Every gearbox is fully stripped, thoroughly cleaned, inspected part by part, any worn or faulty components are replaced, and the whole unit is then reassembled and bench-tested before dispatch. You get reconditioned quality at an exchange price – an approach that is both cost-effective and environmentally responsible.

  • A warranty of up to 24 months depending on the reference, so you can drive with complete peace of mind;
  • Payment in up to 10 instalments, to spread the cost;
  • Delivery throughout France and the European Union, with lead times confirmed at the quote stage;
  • A satisfaction or money-back guarantee on the exchange unit, subject to the conditions set out in our Terms and Conditions;
  • The option to have your own gearbox reconditioned if the reference is not available in our catalogue.

Have your gearbox code (found on the casing) or your vehicle registration number to hand, then browse the Hyundai collection to find the right gearbox for your vehicle. Our advisers are on hand to guide you from choosing the right reference all the way through to fitting at your local garage.
