Toyota Auris: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Toyota Auris: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Toyota Auris: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

A versatile compact, the Toyota Auris is fitted with a gearbox that comes in many variants across its generations. You may service your car regularly and still run into a transmission problem — oil leaks, a gear slipping or refusing to engage, strange noises: these symptoms are rarely misleading. EDEN BOITES, specialist in reconditioned gearboxes, is here to help you make sense of it all.

Gearbox types on the Auris

Gearboxes are not interchangeable between variants: you cannot swap a 5-speed manual for a 6-speed manual or an automated manual gearbox. Compatibility is essential.

The first Auris (2006) was offered with ten engine options. The 1.3 VVT-i 100, 1.6 VVT-i 132, 2.0 D-4D and 2.2 D-4D received a 6-speed manual gearbox (BVM6), while the 1.4 VVT-i 97 and 1.6 VVT-i 124 made do with a BVM5. A 5-speed automatic was fitted to the 1.6 VVT-i 124, and a BVA6 to the 1.6 VVT-i 132.

The Auris 2 (2013) introduced the hybrid. The 1.33 Dual VVT-i 99 received a BVA6, the 1.6 Valvematic 132 and 1.2 116 offered a choice between a BVM6 and a CVT gearbox, and the 1.8 hybrid versions adopted an e-CVT. The diesels in this generation remained on the BVM6. The third generation (2018) dropped the diesel: the hybrid kept its e-CVT, while the 100 VVT-i petrol and the 116 bhp turbocharged petrol received a 6-speed manual gearbox. To understand the differences between these technologies, see our guide on manual and automatic gearboxes.

How to repair the gearbox on your Auris

Do not attempt any work yourself without the proper qualifications: every operation is a delicate one. An oil change requires the correct lubricant, which is specific to each engine. Removal — which is unavoidable for a replacement — must follow a precise sequence, and fitting a new gearbox involves checks, adjustments, and often a reprogramming on automatic gearboxes (BVA).

Entrusting the repair to a professional saves you time and ensures a quality job. You are, of course, free to order the part yourself and then hand it over to your mechanic for fitting.

Buying your Toyota Auris gearbox

Trust the specialists: a quality gearbox prevents premature wear. At EDEN BOITES, we offer a wide range of references on an exchange basis, as used units, or reconditioned. Browse them in the Toyota collection and our gearbox catalogue. We can also carry out a full rebuild of your damaged gearbox. Other Toyota compacts are covered in our guides on the Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Yaris.

Available in petrol, diesel and hybrid, the Auris demands particular attention to compatibility: each engine variant has its own gearbox references and specific lubricant. Always note down the engine code and the reference stamped on the transmission before ordering. Regular maintenance — routine oil changes, fluid level checks and listening out for unusual noises — extends the life of the gearbox, while a gentle running-in period after replacement ensures smooth, consistent gear changes.

Frequently asked questions

Which gearbox does an Auris hybrid take?
An e-CVT gearbox, regardless of the year of manufacture.

Can I fit any gearbox to my Auris?
No: the gearbox must match the engine and the original number of gears.

Is reprogramming always necessary?
On an automatic gearbox, it is almost always essential to ensure all functions work correctly.

Can I buy the gearbox without going through my garage?
Yes — order it directly and hand it to your mechanic for fitting.

For a versatile compact like the Auris, a reconditioned gearbox combines reliability with savings: rebuilt with original parts and fully tested, it performs like new. It is also a responsible choice, giving a quality mechanical assembly a second lease of life rather than replacing it outright with a brand-new unit.

Why choose EDEN BOITES?

EDEN BOITES restores and tests every gearbox before offering it on an exchange basis.
