Manual, automatic, hybrid: the Discovery Sport's gearboxes
Up to 2019, the Discovery Sport was offered primarily with petrol and diesel engines, the most powerful being the 240 bhp Si4 4x4 petrol. Diesel engines were capped at 190 bhp in 2015, then at 180 bhp from 2016 onwards following the discontinuation of the 2.0 SD4. The 2019 facelift introduced a 309 bhp 1.5 hybrid engine, combining a 1.5 petrol unit with an electric motor offering a range of 60 kilometres.
On the transmission side, entry-level diesel models come with a conventional 6-speed manual gearbox, popular with drivers who like to stay in control of gear changes (as on the 2020 Discovery Sport 2.0 D150 R-DYNAMIC). Most pre-2019 versions, however, feature a 9-speed ZF 9HP48 automatic gearbox, well suited to both petrol and diesel engines. Hybrids produced since 2019 are fitted with an Aisin AWF8F35 automatic gearbox — compact and lightweight, capable of managing both petrol and electric modes.
Proper lubrication above all
Whether manual or automatic, your Discovery Sport's gearbox requires proper lubrication. A lack of transmission fluid leads to reduced performance, wear on internal components and, ultimately, the risk of serious damage. If the level is too low, top it up with the fluid specified for your gearbox reference, monitor the condition of the fluid and arrange a drain and refill if it is too contaminated; it may also be necessary to replace the filters. Make sure you also take your vehicle to your mechanic regularly for a full inspection.
Diagnosing and repairing the gearbox
Several warning signs should put you on alert: unusual noises, a burning smell, a slipping sensation or difficulty selecting gears. Only an experienced mechanic can carry out a reliable, lasting and safe repair — a mistake can have serious consequences for your vehicle and your safety.
If you attempt the work yourself, make sure you have the right tools (spanners, sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, gear and bush pullers, spring compressors) and position the vehicle so you can access the underside. Bear in mind that the Discovery Sport weighs approximately 2 tonnes and requires very sturdy axle stands. Remove any obstructing components, carefully lower the gearbox, inspect the seals and then the various parts for signs of wear, replace the faulty component and reassemble everything. If in any doubt, call on your usual mechanic.
