In 2013, the 5.0 V8 SVR pushed output to 575 bhp, and the first petrol-electric and diesel-electric hybrid versions appeared. 6 to 8 speeds: the ZF gearboxes of the Range Rover Sport
The earliest Range Rover Sport models were fitted with ZF 6HP28 6-speed automatic gearboxes, manufactured by the German firm ZF Friedrichshafen AG and renowned for their smooth shifts, which reduce energy loss and fuel consumption — as seen on the Range Rover Sport 2006 3.6 TDV8 272 HSE BVA. From 2013, generations II and III moved to 8 speeds with the ZF 8HP45 automatic gearbox, a straightforward evolution of the 6HP28, to keep pace with the increase in power.
The 8HP45 is, however, limited to a maximum torque of 450 Nm, so it is reserved for lower-torque models. High-torque vehicles, such as the Range Rover Sport III (L461) 3.0 D350 Dynamic, receive the more capable 8HP70 and 8HP75 automatic gearboxes. Extending the life of the automatic gearbox
To ensure the longevity of your Range Rover Sport's automatic gearbox, check the transmission fluid level regularly and keep it within the manufacturer's recommended limits. The 8HP gearboxes require a specific fluid — make sure you use the correct product. An oil change is recommended every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres, dropping to around 60,000 kilometres under demanding driving conditions (frequent towing, mountain roads). Regular servicing by a competent mechanic remains essential.
