Peugeot 306: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Peugeot 306: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

A worthy successor to the 309, the Peugeot 306 was produced in nearly three million units between 1993 and 2002. Built on the Citroën ZX platform and available as a saloon, cabriolet, estate and coupé, this compact remains renowned for its longevity. Despite its robustness, its gearbox can develop faults: EDEN BOITES shares its tips for looking after the gearbox on your Peugeot 306.

Understanding the Peugeot 306's transmission

Launched with petrol engines, the 306 quickly gained diesel options, including the 1.9 D. Like most compacts, it uses a front-wheel-drive layout. The 5-speed manual gearbox is fitted to the majority of versions, rising to 6 speeds on the sporting S16. Some models received a 4-speed automatic gearbox (ZF 4HP14 or AL4), notably the 1.6 with 90 bhp and the 2.0 with 135 bhp.

When and why to change the transmission oil?

Transmission oil is essential to the correct operation of the gearbox. It lubricates the components to ensure smooth gear changes, dissipates heat from the mechanisms and protects the SPI seals against leaks. When insufficient or contaminated with impurities, it can no longer fulfil these roles and causes premature wear. An oil change is recommended every 60,000 km on an automatic gearbox and from 250,000 km on a manual gearbox.

Recognising a faulty gearbox

The most common symptoms are:

  • resistance when changing gear, at the lever or the clutch;
  • unusual noises (clunking, whistling, humming);
  • a burning smell;
  • a drop in vehicle performance;
  • a gear jumping out;
  • unexpected disengagement of the clutch.

Being unable to change gear at all is a serious sign that should not be ignored. Only a professional can confirm the source of the fault: the clutch, flywheel, driveshafts or gear linkage may also be to blame. Describe your observations as precisely as possible to help them make a reliable diagnosis.

Buying a new gearbox

Replacing a gearbox is one of the most costly repairs you can face. EDEN BOITES offers an economical and reliable alternative: a reconditioned gearbox, stripped down, cleaned, repaired and then checked by our specialists. Browse our references in the Peugeot gearboxes collection. Check that your vehicle's gearbox code matches the product listing: our advisers can help you identify it using your number plate. For further reading, see our guides on the Peugeot 307 and the Peugeot 205, or our comparison of manual and automatic gearboxes.

Frequently asked questions

Which automatic gearbox does the 306 use?

Some versions were fitted with a 4-speed automatic gearbox of the ZF 4HP14 or AL4 type, notably the 1.6 with 90 bhp and the 2.0 with 135 bhp.

Is a gear jumping out dangerous?

Yes, it can compromise control of the vehicle. The gearbox should be diagnosed without delay to avoid any risk.

Does the entire gearbox always need replacing?

Not necessarily: depending on the faulty component, a targeted repair is sometimes sufficient. A full replacement is only necessary in the event of widespread failure.

How do I find the gearbox code for my 306?

It is usually stamped or printed on a label on the casing. If it is illegible, EDEN BOITES can identify it from your registration number.
