Volvo XC60: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Volvo XC60: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Volvo XC60: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

Elegant and sophisticated, this Swedish SUV only delivers its full driving pleasure when the mechanicals are in perfect order. The Volvo XC60 gearbox plays a central role: without it, there is no balance between engine speed and road speed. Systematic crunching on gear changes, resistance from the clutch or gear lever, or automatic selections that don't suit driving conditions are all warning signs. This EDEN BOITES guide helps you identify the right reference, understand the repair process, and replace your gearbox with complete peace of mind.

Gearbox Types Available on the Volvo XC60

To do its job properly, the gearbox must be matched to the engine's characteristics. Over successive facelifts, the XC60 gearbox has been offered in several variants. A quick look at your V5C logbook, combined with the history below, will help you identify yours.

Launched in 2008, the first-generation XC60 offered petrol engines of 2.0, 3.0 and 3.2 litres producing 203 to 305 bhp, paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. On the diesel side, outputs ranged from 136 to 215 bhp across 2.0 and 2.4-litre units, also paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

In 2013, the SUV received under-bonnet updates. Diesel engines retained the 6-speed manual as standard, with a 6-speed automatic available as an option. The petrol engines, however, dropped the manual gearbox: the 3.0 T6 AWD 304 bhp received a 6-speed automatic, while the 2.0 T5 FWD 245 bhp and 2.0 T6 FWD 306 bhp moved to an 8-speed automatic.

From 2017 onwards, the 8-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox became standard across the entire engine range, with the manual gearbox disappearing for good. This latest generation includes petrol units B4 Mild Hybrid 211 bhp, B4 AWD 211 bhp, B5 264 bhp and B6 AWD 314 bhp, plug-in hybrid variants T6 eAWD 340 bhp, T8 eAWD 390 bhp and T8 eAWD PSE 405 bhp, as well as the diesel B5 AWD 249 bhp.

How to Repair the Volvo XC60 Gearbox: Step by Step

Attempting a repair yourself risks costly diagnostic mistakes. For your safety and that of the vehicle, book an appointment with a specialist and describe the symptoms as precisely as possible.

The first step is a full gearbox assessment: checking component wear, verifying the lubricant level and condition, and testing the mountings and alignment of all components. Mechatronic units are tested and, where necessary, reprogrammed. The exact procedure depends on the type of gearbox fitted to your XC60.

The second step is identifying the best solution. A good mechanic will explain the pros and cons of each option and provide a detailed quote. If this includes purchasing a replacement gearbox, you are free to source it yourself to keep control of your budget. Finally, the removal process is always preceded by a drain, whether for a repair or a full replacement.
