It is impossible to repair a V40 without knowing which gearbox it requires. The original V40 was an estate derived from the S40 saloon (1995–2004), fitted with a 5-speed manual on certain models and a 4- or 5-speed automatic on others.
On the V40 estate, Volvo fitted petrol engines of 1.6 L 109 hp, 1.8 L 115 hp, 1.8i 125 hp, 2.0 L 140 hp, 2.0T 160 hp and T4 200 hp, all paired with a BVM5. The diesel 1.9 TD 90 hp and 1.9 D 95 hp were no exception. The 2000 facelift added the 1.8 Bi-Fuel 120 hp hybrid, still with a BVM5. Production of the estate ended in 2004.
The V40 was reborn in 2012 as a premium compact. On the petrol side, the T2 and T3 (120 and 150 hp) received a BVM6, the T5 213 hp a BVA6, and the T4 180 hp a choice between BVM6 and BVA6. On the diesel side, the D2 (113 and 115 hp), D3 150 hp and D4 (177 and 190 hp) also offered a choice between BVA6 and BVM6. The 5-cylinder T5 245 hp and D4 180 hp with BVA8 were discontinued in 2014.
The final generation focused on the D2 120 hp and D3 150 hp diesels, each available with a 6-speed Geartronic or a BVM6. The Geartronic displays the selected gear on the instrument cluster and allows a switch to manual mode at any time.
