Focus on the SsangYong Rexton Gearbox
Has a Rexton gearbox problem taken the joy out of driving? Don't worry — it won't last forever. Once the fault has been identified, it's straightforward to plan the repair that's needed.
Before anything else, though, it's essential to get a clear picture of your gearbox's specifications, the issues that can arise, and the solutions available to you.
What types of Rexton gearbox are there?
The Rexton story began in 2002 under the Daewoo badge, before continuing its career with SsangYong from 2004 onwards. It's therefore no surprise that there is sometimes confusion between the two brands, depending on the website, magazine or other source you consult.
To return to the main subject: the first Rexton models were delivered with two diesel engines and two petrol engines. The 2.3 150 hp, 2.7 XDi 165 hp and 2.9 XDi 120 hp units of this generation came with permanent 4-wheel drive paired with a manual 5-speed gearbox. A 4-speed SsangYong Rexton automatic gearbox was paired with the 3.2 V6 220 hp engine.
The manufacturer made improvements to its SUV for the new generation produced from 2006. The 2.7 XDi 156 hp engine was offered with either a 5-speed automatic gearbox or a 5-speed manual gearbox. The RX200e-XDi 155 hp engine gave the choice between a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual.
On sale since 2018, the latest generation hides a 2.2L diesel engine under its bonnet, with power raised to 181 hp. Available in 5- and 7-seat configurations, the Rexton runs with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed E-Tronic automatic.
In summary, your gearbox could be a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 4-speed automatic, a 5-speed automatic or a 7-speed automatic. It's not just the type or the number of ratios that differs between versions — the entire architecture of the gearbox is designed in a specific way. It is therefore vital to identify the correct reference before searching for a replacement part.
How do you choose the right solution for a Rexton gearbox problem?
The first step is to determine the nature of the fault. Is your Rexton automatic gearbox problem showing up as incorrect gear selection? It may be the Rexton automatic gearbox control unit that has failed. A reprogramme may be sufficient, but the problem could be more serious, requiring the complete replacement of the faulty component.
Is your manual gearbox struggling to change gear? A Rexton gearbox oil change will resolve issues caused by degraded lubricant. Your gearbox should regain its smoothness and any irritating noises should disappear.
These examples are provided for guidance only — only a thorough inspection of the gearbox will determine the most appropriate course of action. It goes without saying that in-depth knowledge of the various generations of Rexton gearbox is essential, and specialist tools may also be required depending on the complexity of the case. It is therefore strongly recommended that you take your vehicle to a repair workshop and entrust it to an expert.
Once the checks and tests have been carried out, the mechanic will be able to outline your options. They will confirm in particular whether the repair can be carried out without replacement, or whether the gearbox has reached the end of its life. It should be noted, however, that no mechanic can compel you to purchase parts through them.
Don't hesitate to ask the repairer what precautions to take in order to protect your gearbox after the repair. For example, confirm the ideal interval for oil changes, and find out which oil is suitable should you wish to purchase your lubricants yourself.
