Whether diesel or petrol, the Sportage takes a different turbo depending on the engine code — not just the engine capacity

On the Kia Sportage, two similar engine capacities — 2.0 and 1.7 in diesel, 2.0 and 1.6 in petrol — do not share the same turbo, and within a given capacity, references vary according to the engine code. Correct identification requires the engine code stamped on the block, not simply reading the registration document.

Diesel: D4HA and D4FD — two clearly distinct families

The 2.0 CRDi is based on the D4HA block, a variable-geometry turbo whose most common OEM references are 28231-2G420, 28231-2G400 and 28231-2G410, with equivalent references 794097-5003S, 794097-5001S or 824168-5002S depending on the variant. The 1.7 CRDi 116 hp uses the D4FD block, with different references: 784114-5003S, 28231-2F000, 28231-2F001. Mixing up the two turbos is a common mistake, as their external dimensions are similar. On these diesel blocks, the most well-documented causes of failure are a clogged EGR circuit and degraded engine oil that starves the bearings of lubrication; a whistling noise under acceleration or persistent black smoke are the most common symptoms. Addressing the root cause before replacing the turbo is essential — failing to do so risks destroying the new part.

Petrol T-GDi: Theta 2 and G4FJ — fixed geometry and wastegate

On the petrol side, the 2.0 T-GDi uses the Theta 2 (2L-THETA2) block with a wastegate turbo — references 53039880432, 282302F600, 28231-2F600. The 1.6 T-GDi 177 hp, code G4FJ, takes a separate turbo with references 16399880016, 282312B760, 282312B810 and 285002B760. On high-pressure direct-injection petrol engines, an air leak on the intake circuit or a foreign object that has damaged the compressor wheel are the most frequent causes of failure; a gradual loss of power with the engine entering limp mode is the characteristic warning sign. All turbos listed on this page are new, supplied with their OEM reference or an identified equivalent reference.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Kia Sportage Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Kia Sportage Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.

    Engine codes covered: Theta, Theta 2, 2L-THETA2, 6AT4WD, D4HA, D4FD, G4FJ
