Wrangler: 3 engines, 5 engine codes and two generations of manual gearboxes – don't mix them up

The first trap with the Wrangler is relying on engine capacity alone. The 4.0-litre petrol was fitted with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual depending on the generation of the vehicle, and its two code families — AMC 242 and PowerTech 4.0 — identify distinct blocks that do not necessarily share the same output gearbox. Using engine capacity as the sole criterion therefore risks ordering an incompatible part.

Diesel and petrol: different transmission architectures

The 2.8 CRD (codes ENR and ENS) is the most common engine in this selection, covering the years 2007 to 2018 with a 6-speed manual. The two codes ENR and ENS correspond to different evolutions of this diesel block: they are not interchangeable at gearbox level, and the distinction must be verified on the engine before placing any order. The 2.5-litre petrol (code AMC 150, VIN P) is only available with a 5-speed manual — this is the oldest configuration in the Wrangler range covered here.

Identify your gearbox precisely before choosing

On a Wrangler used intensively — off-road, green-laning, towing — manual gearboxes are subjected to significant mechanical stress, particularly on the synchromesh rings and selector forks. Correct identification requires the engine code stamped on the block combined with the model year, not just the engine capacity shown on the vehicle's documents. Two purchasing options are available depending on the part: exchange or rebuild of your own gearbox, the latter allowing you to keep your own reconditioned unit.
