3.0 or 3.3 V6: two similar engine capacities, four distinct engine codes on the Kia Sorento

The petrol Kia Sorento spans the 2002–2020 period with four V6 engine capacities — 3.0, 3.3, 3.5 and 3.8 — but it is between the 3.0 and the 3.3 that the risk of confusion is greatest. These two engines share the same Kia V6 architecture and similar external dimensions, yet they are not interchangeable: the 3.0 uses the codes G6DE or G6DG, whilst the 3.3 corresponds to the codes G6DB or G6DF. Two distinct codes exist within each engine capacity, which means the engine capacity alone is not sufficient to identify the correct part.

Check the engine code before placing any order

On the Sorento, the engine code is stamped directly on the block itself and also appears on the Korean or European registration document depending on the version. This code is the only reliable reference: a second-generation Sorento fitted with a 3.3 may show G6DB or G6DF depending on the year of production and the destination market. The 3.5 (G6DC) and the 3.8 (G6DA) each have a single unique code, which makes identification straightforward. These two engines are present in smaller numbers across the range.

All six codes in this collection — G6DA, G6DB, G6DC, G6DE, G6DF, G6DG — correspond to bare petrol engines. No diesel units fall within the scope of the Sorento referenced here. The sales method is exchange: check your engine code first rather than relying on the engine capacity or the vehicle's year, as neither provides sufficient distinction between the G6DE and G6DG variants for the 3.0, nor between G6DB and G6DF for the 3.3.
