Mazda 3 diesel before and after 2008: why the 6-speed gearboxes on the 1.6 MZR-CD don't all age in the same way

On the 1.6 MZR-CD, the early production runs (engine code Y6, introduced as far back as 2004) showed premature wear on the lower gears under heavy urban use, leading to difficulty engaging 1st and 2nd, followed by gear jumping. The later variants — Y601, Y650 and Y655 — represent successive mechanical revisions; their internals and casings are not identical, which makes the engine code number critical when selecting the correct unit. A Y6 and a Y655 are not direct substitutes, even though both power a 1.6 diesel Mazda 3.

1.5 petrol P5-VPS: a very different profile

The 1.5 petrol, identified by the engine code P5-VPS, also uses a 6-speed manual gearbox, but from a completely separate family to those on the diesel. The wear symptoms observed on this unit are generally linked to high mileage rather than any documented design weakness. The range covers model years 2004 to 2019: across that span, the vehicle generation and the year of first registration matter just as much as the engine code when determining the exact reference to order.

Two supply options depending on the condition of the original unit

Depending on the engine and the reference, the range offers either a standard exchange or a standard exchange rebuilt to 0 km. These two options do not involve the same level of mechanical intervention: the second entails a complete strip-down and systematic replacement of all wear components, regardless of their apparent condition. For a high-mileage 1.6 MZR-CD already showing signs of difficult gear engagement, this distinction is worth bearing in mind when making your choice.
