Swift manual gearbox: the same 5 speeds, but three distinct units depending on the generation

All Swift models covered here (2005–2017) are fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox, but the correct unit to order depends on the engine installed. The M13A (1.3) is fitted to Swift models of the NZ/MZ generation, the M16A (1.6) to the Swift Sport, whilst engine codes K12B and K12C (1.2) correspond to the more recent AZ/EZ generations. These engine families do not share the same gearbox: checking the engine code stamped on the block before placing any order is essential.

Exchange or rebuild: when one is the better option

Both purchasing options are available across this range. Exchange suits situations where the gearbox has failed but the vehicle needs to be back on the road quickly: a reconditioned unit is dispatched and the old unit is collected in return. Rebuilding the customer's own unit makes the most sense for the rarest references — in particular the gearbox for the M16A (1.6 Swift Sport, a single reference in the catalogue) or for certain 1.3 variants — when no compatible exchange unit is available in stock, or when the customer wishes to have their own gearbox reconditioned rather than receiving an exchange unit.

Key points to check by engine type

The 1.3 M13A accounts for the bulk of the volume (five distinct references), which reflects the variety of variants across trim levels and model years. The 1.2 K12B and K12C gearboxes, despite sharing the same engine capacity, are not interchangeable: the engine generation determines the correct match. On the Swift Sport 1.6 M16A, the gearbox handles a higher torque output; premature wear of the synchromesh rings, particularly on 2nd and 3rd gear changes, is a symptom frequently reported on this unit. Accurately identifying the engine code and the vehicle's year of manufacture remains the only way to ensure compatibility.
