With Toyota, it is the model and engine code that determine the sourcing approach, not the engine capacity

The same 2.0 D-4D does not take the same gearbox depending on whether it is fitted to a RAV4, an Avensis or a Verso, and a Land Cruiser 3.0 D-4D has nothing in common with a 3.0 TD from an earlier generation. The first essential piece of information is therefore the engine code stamped on the block: 1KD-FTV, 2AD-FTV, 1CD-FTV, 1ZZ-FE or 2ZR-FAE, among others — each corresponds to a distinct mechanical family covering very different applications, from the Yaris city car to the Hilux or Land Cruiser in off-road use. For Toyota gearboxes, the majority of available references are sold on an exchange basis; rebuilding the original unit makes sense when the reference is rare or no longer in the active catalogue, which applies in particular to certain transfer cases or configurations specific to the Land Cruiser and Hilux.

Gearboxes: the largest range, with several identification pitfalls

Gearboxes make up the bulk of the Toyota range. They cover 5- and 6-speed manuals depending on the model and engine, as well as the MultiMode transmission found on certain versions. A Proace shares architectures with PSA powertrains (cross-referenced codes such as 4WZFTV/DW10FD or 3WZHV/DV6FC), which means particular care is needed with the exact code to avoid confusing it with a purely Toyota reference. On the Corolla, Auris and Avensis, the 1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV), 2.0 D-4D (1AD-FTV) and 2.2 D-4D (2AD-FTV) diesel engines each have their own gearbox; the year of manufacture further narrows the selection between these variants.

Engines and transfer case: a more targeted scope

The reconditioned engines available cover a selection of petrol and diesel units, supplied as bare engines. The transfer case, the only one in the range, concerns the 4x4 segment — Land Cruiser or Hilux depending on the configuration. It is precisely for these slow-moving parts that rebuilding the original unit becomes a worthwhile option to consider, when an exchange unit is not available for the engine code or reference in question.
