On the C5, the same 2.0 HDi can take incompatible turbos depending on the engine code

This is the most common pitfall with this generation: the 2.0 HDi comes in several power variants — 90 hp (code RHY), 109 hp (codes DW10ATED, RHZ) and up to 150, 163, 165 hp or BlueHDi 150 (codes AHE, AHR, AHW, AHX, RHC, RHE, RHH) — and each group corresponds to a distinct turbo reference. Two diesel C5s with the same engine capacity can therefore require completely different parts. The engine code, stamped on the block or found in the vehicle documentation, is the only reliable starting point for identifying the correct reference.

Eight engine variants, clearly distinct engine families

The C5 covers a wide range: from the 1.6 HDi (codes 9HJ, 9HP, 9HS, 9HX, 9HY, 9HZ) to the 2.2 HDi 133/136 hp (codes 4HX, DW12TED4, DW12TED4S), including more recent petrol units — 1.2 PureTech (HNP, HNS, HNV, HNY, HNZ), 1.5 BlueHDi 130 (YHR, YHS, YHV, YHX, YHZ) and the 1.6 Hybrid 180/225 (DGY). These families share no turbo references whatsoever. OEM and equivalent references also vary by production batch: for example, the 1.6 HDi is associated with references such as 753420-5006S or 0375J3, whilst the 2.0 HDi 109 hp corresponds in particular to references 53039880050 and 9640168280.

Causes of failure and points to check before replacement

On HDi units, a clogged EGR circuit and a blocked diesel particulate filter are common causes of excessive exhaust gas temperatures, which degrade lubrication of the turbo bearings. On PureTech units, engine oil quality and level are critical: a bearing seized through lack of lubrication leads to a pressure drop at the compressor outlet, a characteristic whistling noise and then the vehicle entering limp-home mode. Fitting a new turbo without having identified and addressed the root cause — degraded oil, a failing head gasket, intake fouling — will invariably result in a repeat failure. All turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Citroën C5 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Citroën C5 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
