Turbo Citroën Berlingo: three decades of engines, how many different references?

The answer is often greater than you might expect. The Berlingo has spanned several generations with an engine range that has been thoroughly renewed: the 1.4 HDi (DV4TD) found in the earliest van versions, the 2.0 HDi 90 (DW10TD / RHY) fitted to first- and second-generation Berlingos, then the 1.6 HDi in two distinct variants — one covering the 75 and 90 hp versions (DV6ATED4, DV6B), the other the 90 and 110 hp versions (9HJ, 9HP, 9HS, 9HV, 9HX, 9HZ) — and finally the 1.5 BlueHDi introduced with the Berlingo III, in two power outputs (DV5RD, DV5RE for 75/100/102 hp; YHZ/DV5RC for 131 hp). On the petrol side, the 1.2 PureTech / THP also comes in two groups of engine codes (HB2DT, HB2DTS, HNZ on one side; HNP, HNS, HNV on the other) that do not share the same turbos.

Why the engine code is essential on the Berlingo

The same 1.6 HDi 90 hp can belong to two entirely unrelated engine families, and the same 1.2 petrol 110 hp can correspond to different engine codes depending on the vehicle's generation. The engine capacity and power output shown on the registration document alone are not enough to identify the correct turbo reference: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable identifier, and should be cross-referenced with manufacturer references (examples: 9652443280, 9657530580 for certain 1.6 HDi units; 9645247080, 9645247280 for the 2.0 HDi; 9813245480 for the 1.5 BlueHDi 75/100/102 hp).

Common symptoms and points to check before fitting

On the 1.6 HDi and 1.4 HDi, a blocked oil circuit and a degraded particulate filter are among the most common causes of turbo failure: blue smoke on start-up, whistling under acceleration, loss of power, or the engine going into limp mode are the usual warning signs. On the 1.5 BlueHDi, lubrication issues during cold starts deserve particular attention. Addressing the root cause (oil circuit, EGR, DPF) before fitting is essential: a new or reconditioned turbo fitted to an engine whose underlying fault has not been rectified will be damaged very quickly. For the 2.0 HDi 90, the references available here include both new and reconditioned turbos; for all other Berlingo engines, only new turbos are offered.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Citroën Berlingo Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Citroën Berlingo Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
