Daily 2.3 D and 2.8 TD: two engine code families, two turbo logics

On the Daily, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reference that allows you to identify the exact turbo. The range covers two main families: the older blocks8140 (2.5 TD, 2.8 TD, 2.8 D) and theF1A / F1C blocks (2.3 D and 3.0 D / HPI / HPT), which share no common parts despite sometimes similar engine capacities. An 8140.43 and an F1AE do not take the same turbo, and within each family, the code variant (8140.43, 8140.43B, 8140.43C, 8140.43K, 8140.43N, 8140.43S…) or the F1A suffix (F1AE0481C, F1AE0481F, F1AE0481V, F1AE3481A, F1AFL411B, F1AGL411G…) determines the manufacturer reference to order. Two similar codes are not necessarily interchangeable.

8140 Blocks: 2.5 TD, 2.8 TD and 2.8 D

The 2.5 TD engines (codes8140.27.2700, 8140.27.2870, 8140.47) and 2.8 TD/TDI in all their power variants (90, 103, 110, 115, 122 hp — codes8140.23, 8140.23.3700, 8140.43, 8140.43.2585, 8140.43.2600, 8140.43.3700, 8140.43B, 8140.43C, 8140.43K, 8140.43N, 8140.43S, 8140.43S.4000) all receive a new turbo, sold as a straightforward sale with no old unit to return. Variable geometry is fitted on several references in this generation; actuator failure or fouling of the vanes causes a gradual loss of power or the engine entering limp mode. The most common cause remains engine oil degradation or insufficient lubrication at start-up.

F1A and F1C Blocks: 2.3 D and 3.0 D / HPI / HPT

The 2.3 D covers a wide power range (95 to 156 hp) depending on the code:F1AE0481C, F1AE0481D, F1AE0481F, F1AE0481G, F1AE0481N, F1AE0481R, F1AE0481U, F1AE0481V, F1AE3481A, F1AE3481B, F1AE3481C, F1AE3481D, F1AFL411B, F1AFL411C, F1AGL411G, F1AGL411J — all with a new turbo. The 3.0 HPI, 3.0 HPT and 3.0 D (codesF1C, F1CE0481FA, F1CE0481HA, F1CFL411F) are also available with a new turbo, with the exception of the3.0 D 205 hp (codesF1CE3481C, F1CE3481K), available as a reconditioned turbo on an exchange basis. On all these engines, persistent blue smoke or an abnormal whistling noise are the first signs of seal or bearing failure. Before any replacement, identifying and correcting the root cause — EGR circuit fouling, a blocked DPF, or an air leak on the intake circuit — is essential to prevent a rapid recurrence.
