SEAT Altea Turbo: from the early 1.9 TDI to the 2.0 TDI 170 hp — two engine families with nothing in common

The Altea is first and foremost a family hatchback built for everyday use — urban commutes, mixed roads, often loaded with passengers and a full boot. This usage profile puts the turbo under a different kind of stress than a leisure SUV: frequent cold starts, short trips that prevent the oil from reaching its optimum temperature, followed by motorway runs under load. It is precisely in these conditions that the bearings and shaft-seal integrity deteriorate first, well before any wear to the variable geometry mechanism itself.

1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI: two architectures, references that never overlap

The 1.9 TDI 90 and 105 hp engines (codes BJB, BKC, BXE, BXF, BLS, BRU, BXJ) use a variable-geometry turbo whose manufacturer references begin with 038253… For these engines, a reconditioned turbo is available alongside the new turbo. The 2.0 TDI 136, 140 and 170 hp engines (codes AZV, BKD, BKP, CFFA, CFFB, CBBB, CFHC) belong to an entirely different family: their references are built around the prefixes 03G253… and 03L253…, and only the new turbo is offered for these variants. The 2.0 TDI 170 hp (CBBB, CFHC) is not interchangeable with the 2.0 TDI 140 hp, even though the engine capacity is identical: the difference in power output means a distinct CHRA and actuator are required.

Identifying the correct reference: the engine code takes priority over the stated power output

On the Altea, the manufacturer's plate and the engine code stamped on the block remain the only reliable means of identification. Two Alteas of the same year both showing "140 hp" may carry a BKD or a BKP, and the associated turbo references differ accordingly. The classic symptoms of turbo failure — a whistling noise under acceleration, grey smoke at idle, loss of power under load — can just as easily stem from a clogged EGR valve or a blocked diesel particulate filter as from the turbo itself. Addressing the underlying cause before any replacement avoids damaging the new part within the first hours of operation.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SEAT Altea Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SEAT Altea Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
