Toledo turbo: 100% diesel, but how many different turbos for the same 1.9?

The Toledo offers no petrol turbocharged engine in this catalogue: every variant covered runs a diesel unit, from the 1.9 TD 75 hp indirect-injection engine through to the 2.0 TDI 136 hp common-rail direct-injection unit. This exclusively diesel scope does not make identification any simpler: the 1.9 engine capacity alone spans a range from 75 to 150 hp, spread across around ten distinct engine codes — AAZ, AFN, AGR, AHF, ALH, AJM, ARL, ASV, ASZ, AUY, AZV, BJB, BKC, BLS, BRU, BXE, BXF — which share neither the same turbo nor the same air-supply architecture.

Variable geometry or wastegate: what the engine code changes

The earliest 1.9 TD and TDI engines (codes AAZ, AFN, AGR, ALH, 75 to 110 hp) use turbos with a fixed geometry and wastegate: boost is regulated mechanically via the blow-off valve, with no movable vanes. The more powerful variants — ARL 150 hp, ASZ 130 hp, AJM, AUY, and the common-rail 2.0 TDI units (AZV, BJB, BKC, BLS, BRU, BXE, BXF) — move to a variable-geometry turbine (VNT) whose adjustable vanes manage boost pressure according to engine speed. These two families are not interchangeable: the manufacturer references, the CHRA, the turbine housing and the actuator all differ completely, even when the stated power outputs are similar.

Symptoms, causes and precautions before replacement

On the VNT units fitted to the 1.9 TDI, fouling of the variable-geometry vanes is the most common failure: it manifests as a loss of power under load, an abnormal whistling noise, or the engine entering limp-home mode. On fixed-geometry versions, failure most often stems from insufficient lubrication — degraded oil, too long a delay before oil pressure builds after start-up, or a blocked oil return. In both cases, identifying and rectifying the root cause (oil circuit, EGR, blocked DPF) is essential before fitting a replacement turbo, whether new or reconditioned.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SEAT Toledo Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SEAT Toledo Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
