SEAT Leon Turbo: from the 1.8 T of the early generations to the 2.0 TSI Cupra, twenty years of varying demands on the turbo

The Leon is first and foremost a compact car built for intensive daily use — short urban runs, regular motorway driving, and spirited driving in Cupra trim. These usage patterns have a direct impact on the turbo: repeated cold starts without letting the engine reach operating temperature, switching the engine off immediately after hard driving, or running on oil that has been left too long between changes are the main causes of turbo failure across this range. Before replacing a turbo on a Leon, it is essential to address the root cause — EGR fouling, oil quality, air leaks in the intake circuit — regardless of the engine fitted.

1.8 T and 1.9 TDI: the older families, between new and reconditioned turbos

The entry-level petrol engines are based on the 1.8 T (codes AGU, AJQ, APP, AQA) and on the 180 hp Cupra version (codes AJQ, APP, ARY, ARZ, AUQ). Only the 1.8 T 180 hp Cupra is available as a reconditioned turbo; the standard 1.8 T is offered as a new turbo. On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI covers a wide range: 90 hp (AGR, ALH), 105 hp, 110 hp (AJM, AUY, BVK), 115 hp, 130 hp (ASZ), 150 hp (ARL), and the Cupra / Cupra R variants at 150–160 hp (BPX, BUK). The 1.9 TDI 90/105 hp is the only version to offer both options — new turbo and reconditioned turbo — with a particularly extensive set of engine codes (AGR, AHF, AJM, ALH, ASV, ATD, AUY, AVQ, BEW, BJB, BKC, BLS, BRU, BXE, BXF, BXJ): checking the code stamped on the block is essential, as two Leon 1.9 TDI 90 hp vehicles can carry different turbo references.

2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI Cupra: variable geometry and high-demand use

The 2.0 TDI is available in outputs ranging from 110 to 170 hp on the Leon, with distinct engine codes depending on power output: AZV and BKD for the 136/140 hp, ASZ for the 130 hp on the 1.9 side, BMN, CBBB, CEGA, CFFA, CFFB, CFGB, CFGC, CFGD, CFJA, CFJB, CLLA, CLLB, DLUB for the 170 hp variants, and CKFC, CRBC, CRLB, CRMB, DCYA, DFFA, DFGA for the more recent 110 to 150 hp versions. These variable-geometry turbos are particularly susceptible to fouling of the turbine vanes: running in limp mode, persistent black smoke, or a marked loss of power are the characteristic symptoms. All are available as new turbos.

The 2.0 TSI Cupra versions (265, 280, 290, 300 and 310 hp, codes CJXA, CJXB, CJXC, CJXE, CJXG, CJXH, CYFB, DJHA, DNUA, DNUC, DNUF) are fitted with a specific high-pressure turbo — the IS38 reference being the best known — designed for sustained high revs. Track use or regular spirited driving accelerates bearing wear and actuator fouling. These turbos are available as new turbos. The exact reference depends on the engine code: at the same stated power output, two different codes may call for different references.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SEAT Leon Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SEAT Leon Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
