4 gearbox types for 9 engines: the manual / DSG breakdown on the Leon from 1999 to 2020

The Leon spans more than twenty years of production and nine distinct engines. Across this range, four gearbox families are represented: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7. The split is not random: entry-level engines (the naturally aspirated 1.4, the 1.6 petrol, and the first-generation 1.9 TDI) were fitted exclusively with 5-speed manuals, while the more recent or more powerful units come with a DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Identifying your gearbox type before searching for a reference is therefore the essential first step.

Engines with a single gearbox option: less ambiguity, but identification pitfalls remain

Three engines are available with only one gearbox type. The 1.6 petrol (engine codes BGU, BSE, BSF) is fitted exclusively with the 5-speed manual. The naturally aspirated 1.4 (engine codes BXW, CGGB) likewise. The 1.2 TSI (engine codes CBZA, CBZB, CYVB) is fitted exclusively with the 6-speed manual. For these engines, the gearbox type is not in question, but the engine code remains essential: two different codes can correspond to gearboxes that are mechanically incompatible despite having the same engine capacity.

Engines with two options: manual or DSG depending on year and trim level

Six engines are available with either a manual or a DSG. The 1.6 TDI (engine codes CAYC, CLHA) can be fitted with a 5-speed manual or a DSG 7. The 1.4 TSI (engine codes CAXC, CZCA) comes with either a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7. The 1.8 TSI (engine codes CJSA, CJSB) covers both the 6-speed manual and the DSG 7. The 2.0 TSI (engine codes CCZB, CJXA, CULC) and the 2.0 TDI (engine codes BKD, BMM, BMN, CFHC) both come with either a 6-speed manual or a DSG 6. The 1.9 TDI (engine codes ASZ, BKC, BLS, BXE, BXF) can be fitted with a 5- or 6-speed manual depending on the version. For these engines, the engine code alone is not sufficient: the exact trim level of the vehicle determines which gearbox was fitted as original equipment. The DSG 6 and DSG 7 are sold without the mechatronic unit.
