4 gearbox types on the SEAT Leon: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, DSG 6 or DSG 7 depending on the engine

On Leons produced between 1999 and 2020, the transmission is not a one-size-fits-all choice: it depends directly on the engine. The older naturally aspirated units — the 1.4 and the 1.6 — are paired only with the 5-speed manual. The 1.9 TDI can be coupled to either a 5-speed or a 6-speed manual depending on the generation. With the more recent engines, the picture changes: the 1.2 TSI and the 1.4 TSI in manual form move to a 6-speed, while the 1.4 TSI and the 1.6 TDI also offer the DSG 7. The 2.0 TSI and the 2.0 TDI are the only ones to receive the DSG 6 — a wet dual-clutch 6-speed gearbox, different in design from the dry-clutch DSG 7.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: two architectures, two behaviours

The DSG 6 (DQ250) fitted to the 2.0 TSI and the 2.0 TDI is a wet dual-clutch gearbox, designed to handle high torque. The DSG 7 (DQ200) fitted to the 1.4 TSI, the 1.6 TDI and the 1.8 TSI uses a dry clutch — lighter, but known to be more susceptible to wear in heavy urban use. The two families are not interchangeable. Both are sold with a new dual-clutch assembly, without the mechatronic unit: the mechatronic unit remains the customer's responsibility.

26 engine codes to guide identification

This guide covers 26 distinct engine codes, including BKC, BXE, BLS, CAYC and CLHA on the diesel side, and CAXC, CZCA, CCZB, CULC and CBZA on the petrol side. On the 1.4 TSI in particular, codes CAXC and CZCA do not share the same gearbox: one may take the DSG 7, the other the 6-speed manual. Engine capacity alone is therefore not enough to identify the correct part — the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference, supplemented by the vehicle's first registration date.
