SEAT Leon Engines from 1999 to 2020: from the 1.6 naturally aspirated to TSI and TDI units, two decades of distinct engine families

Over twenty-one years of production, the Leon spanned three generations and featured eight different engines, both petrol and diesel. From the 1.6 naturally aspirated unit of the early years (codes BGU, BSE, BSF) to the direct-injection TSI petrols and variable-geometry TDI diesels of the 2010s, the engine architectures share nothing in common. On the petrol side, the break comes around 2005–2006: before that, the 1.8 T 20V (AGU, AJQ, APP, AQA, AUM, AUQ) and the 1.6 dominated; afterwards, the TSI families took over with the 1.2 TSI (7 codes: CBZA to CYVD), the 1.4 TSI (5 codes: CAXA, CAXC, CHPB, CXSA, CZDA) and the 2.0 TSI (10 codes: AXX to CJXG). On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI (AVQ, BRU, BSU, BSW, BXJ) gradually gave way to the 1.6 TDI (7 codes: CAYC to DDYB) and the 2.0 TDI (11 codes: BMM to CUPA), which coexist on the third generation.

Why engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the unit

Each engine range covers several engine codes corresponding to power variants, generations or emissions standards. The 2.0 TDI alone spans 11 distinct codes, and the 2.0 TSI has 10: two units sharing the same capacity and the same badge can differ in their cylinder head, injection system or crankshaft.Only the code stamped on the block itself — not the engine capacity or the power output shown on the V5 — allows you to order the correct bare engine. This code, usually visible on the lower part of the block on the gearbox side, is the only reliable reference among the 54 codes listed within this range.

Petrol or diesel: what each family means for the engine unit

TSI petrol units feature high-pressure direct injection, which is absent from the indirect-injection 1.8 T 20V: a failure on a CZDA or a CJXC has neither the same causes nor the same mechanical consequences as a failure on an AQA. On the diesel side, the move from the 1.9 TDI (mechanical injection pump on certain versions) to the common-rail TDI of the 1.6 and 2.0 significantly changes the ancillary components to plan for when carrying out a replacement. The engines offered here are bare engines: ancillaries (turbo, injectors, injection pump) are not included and must be transferred or replaced separately depending on their condition.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a engine for this SEAT model in stock?

We currently list 54 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my SEAT?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right engine for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old engine (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the engine for my SEAT?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
