SEAT Leon Engines: from the 1.6 naturally aspirated pre-2010 to the TSI and TDI units of the third generation

The Leon spanned three generations between 2005 and 2020, featuring very different engine families depending on the era. Before 2010, the range was built around naturally aspirated or first-generation direct-injection engines — the 1.6 naturally aspirated (AVQ, BXJ) and the early 1.9 TDI (AGU, AQA, AJQ, AUM, AUQ) — whose design differs structurally from the units that replaced them. From the second generation onwards, Seat moved to the EA111 and then EA888 architectures on the petrol side, and EA189 then EA288 on the diesel side, with specific engine codes for each power output.

Petrol: three TSI families — units that are not interchangeable

The 1.2 TSI (BSU, BSW, CBZA…), the 1.4 TSI (CAXC, CTHD…) and the 1.8 TSI (CAWB, BWA) all share the principle of direct injection but have neither the same cylinder block, nor the same cylinder head, nor the same valve timing system. The 2.0 TSI, available in standard and Cupra versions (CCZB, CCZA, CUPA, CUNA), reaches power outputs that require reinforced pistons and connecting rods: a 2.0 TSI 180 hp unit and a 2.0 TSI Cupra 280 hp unit share the same engine capacity designation but are not mechanically interchangeable.

Diesel: from the 1.9 TDI to the 2.0 TDI — always identify the engine code first

The 1.9 TDI (BMM, BMN) was fitted to the Leon I and II up to around 2010. It was then superseded by the 2.0 TDI in its many variants (CAYC, CFHA, CFHF, CFJA, CRBC, CRMB, CLHA, CRKB), covering 110 to 184 hp depending on the model year and generation. The 1.6 TDI (CEGA) represents a third, more recent family, with a different variable-geometry turbocharger. For each of these units, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable means of identification: engine capacity and stated power output alone are not sufficient to distinguish between two incompatible references. All engines listed here are reconditioned bare engines.
