SEAT Altea Engine 2004 to 2015: which engine code determines the correct reference?

It is the engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity alone — that defines the exact reference to order. On the Altea, a single 2.0 TDI engine size covers, for example, the codes BMM, CBDA, CBDB or CCZA, each corresponding to a different architecture or power output: they are not interchangeable.

Seven engine variants — codes not to be confused

The catalogue covers seven engine variants spanning petrol and diesel, from 2004 to 2015. On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI (codes AVQ, BXJ, BSW) precedes the 2.0 TDI (codes BMM, CBDA, CBDB, CCZA), introduced progressively with different power outputs and injection systems. On the petrol side, the range runs from the naturally aspirated 1.6 (BSE, BSF, BGU) to the turbocharged TSI units: 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC), 1.4 TSI (CEGA), 1.8 TSI (CAWB) and 2.0 TSI (BWA, BPY). The 2.0 TSI BPY and the BWA are mechanically similar, but their engine references remain distinct.

Key points to watch depending on the engine

The first-generation 2.0 TDI (BMM) is known for crankshaft and dual-mass flywheel issues at high mileage. The 1.9 TDI, an older EDC block, is on the other hand generally regarded as mechanically reliable. Among the TSI units, the 1.4 (CEGA) and the 1.8 (CAWB) share the EA111/EA888 platform but have no internal parts in common. Always check the four-letter code on the block before placing any order: on the Altea XL in particular, the same model year can accommodate two versions of the same engine capacity depending on the power output specified.
