Why does the Leon 1.4 TSI suffer internal engine failure before 150,000 km?

The Leon's 1.4 TSI has two well-known weaknesses: rapid build-up of deposits in the timing chain on codes CAXA and CAXC (2007–2012), with chain stretch causing stalling or difficult starting, and a tendency towards abnormal oil consumption on later generations. These failures frequently lead to internal engine damage that makes repair alone insufficient.

Six engine codes cover the Leon 1.4 TSI between 2007 and 2020: CAXA, CAXC, CAWB, CXSA, CHPB and CZDA. Each code corresponds to a specific power output and generation — the CZDA (150 hp, Leon III) cannot be substituted by a CAXA (122 hp, Leon II). Identification must be based on the engine code, not solely on engine capacity or the vehicle's year.
