6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG on the Leon 1.4 TSI: did the switch happen before or after 2012?

It is a fair question: the 1.4 TSI was paired with two very different transmissions depending on the generation of the vehicle. Before 2012, the 6-speed manual gearbox was the dominant choice; from the Mk3 (2012–2020) onwards, the 7-speed DSG with dry dual-clutch became standard on mid-power variants.

Two engine codes, two distinct periods

The codes CAXC and CZCA cover the Leon 1.4 TSI from 2007 to 2020, but they do not share the same gearbox. The CAXC (122 hp) is primarily paired with the 6-speed manual on the Mk2; the CZCA (140 hp) is fitted to the Mk3 and is almost exclusively paired with the 7-speed DSG. Checking the code stamped on the engine is essential before placing any order: a gearbox reference from the wrong generation will not be compatible.

7-speed DSG with dry dual-clutch: a specific point to watch

The 7-speed DSG (DQ200) fitted to this engine uses a dry dual-clutch, unlike the wet DSG 6 found on the 2.0 TDI. It is known for juddering during low-speed manoeuvres and jerking at slow speeds — symptoms that are often wrongly attributed to the mechatronic unit. The gearbox is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch included. If symptoms persist after replacing the mechanical gearbox, the mechatronic unit must be diagnosed separately.
