Rebuild or exchange: which option for a reconditioned SEAT Toledo gearbox?

For the Toledo (1998–2009), only the standard exchange option is available in this collection. Rebuilding the customer's original unit — where we recondition their own gearbox and return it to them — is not offered on this model. This is worth confirming before ordering, particularly if the gearbox has suffered significant structural damage or if the customer needs to retain their original part number. The exchange option covers all engine variants listed here: 1.9 TDI, 1.6 TDI and 1.6 petrol, with a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox depending on the engine.

Identifying the correct gearbox by engine code

The Toledo was fitted with several engine variants within the same capacity, and the associated gearboxes are not always interchangeable. On the 1.9 TDI, engine codes AGR, ALH, ASV, AJM, AUY and ARL were used across different generations and power outputs, with either 5- or 6-speed gearboxes. On the 1.6 TDI, codes BXE, BKC, BLS, CAYC and CLNA exclusively use a 5-speed manual. The 1.6 petrol (codes AKL, AEH, APF, AUS, BCB) is also covered in 5-speed. The engine code stamped on the block is the essential reference to avoid ordering errors — the vehicle's year alone is not sufficient to determine the correct gearbox.

What the 1.9 TDI means in practice

The 1.9 TDI Toledo accounts for the largest number of available references (four references, compared with two for the 1.6 TDI and three for the 1.6 petrol), reflecting the wide range of variants produced between 1998 and 2009. 6-speed gearboxes are exclusive to certain 1.9 TDI engine codes; no other Toledo engine variant listed here is fitted with one. On vehicles used intensively or with high mileage, the 1.9 TDI is the engine variant whose gearboxes most frequently show early signs of synchromesh wear, particularly on 3rd and 4th gear.
