16 engine codes on the SEAT Toledo (1998–2009): why the gearbox fails and how to find your way around

On the Toledo of this generation, the symptoms that lead to manual gearbox replacement are well established. On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI in its most heavily used versions (codes ARL, AJM in particular) accumulates torque and mileage: the 2nd and 3rd gear synchronisers go first, followed by wear on the selector forks. On the petrol side, the 1.6 (codes AEH, AKL, APF, AUS, BCB) rarely suffers internal mechanical failures, but the input bearings and seals deteriorate badly over the years. The 1.6 TDI (CAYC, CLNA), which appeared later, has a different reliability profile from the older 1.9.

1.9 TDI: 5-speed or 6-speed manual – a difference that matters

With 9 engine codes spread across two gearbox types, the 1.9 TDI is the most complex engine to identify on the Toledo. Certain years and certain codes were fitted with a 5-speed manual, others with a 6-speed manual: the engine code stamped on the block, combined with the year of first registration, is the only way to determine which gearbox was fitted as standard. Mixing up the two families will result in a fitment incompatibility.

1.6 petrol and 1.6 TDI: two families with no mechanical connection

The 1.6 petrol and the 1.6 TDI share the same engine capacity but have no gearbox in common. The 1.6 petrol covers the period 1998–2004 or thereabouts, with five distinct codes (AEH, AKL, APF, AUS, BCB). The 1.6 TDI (CAYC, CLNA) appears on later model years and is fitted with a differently designed 5-speed gearbox. Going by the engine code rather than engine capacity alone avoids ordering an incompatible part. Both engines are available on an exchange basis only.
