6-speed manual or DSG 6: two very different gearboxes for the Leon 2.0 TDI from 2005 to 2020

The 2.0 TDI in the Leon spanned several generations and four distinct engine codes — BKD, BMM, BMN and CFHC — covering a fifteen-year period (2005–2020). This was not a straightforward evolution: depending on the generation and power output, the associated gearbox changes radically in type. The early versions (BKD, BMM, BMN) were fitted with either a 6-speed manual or a DSG 6, while the CFHC marks the shift to the more recent Leon models. The gearbox references identified within this scope — PGT, PFN, PFL, NFP, NFN, LHD, KXZ, KRM, KNY, KMY — are not interchangeable between these two transmission families.

6-speed manual and DSG 6: what sets them apart technically

The 6-speed manual is a straightforward mechanical gearbox with no onboard electronics in the casing. The DSG 6, with its wet dual-clutch system, incorporates a mechatronic unit that is integral to its operation: on the DSG 6 gearboxes listed here, the mechatronic unit is not included. This is the critical identification point before placing any order: check not only the engine code stamped on the block, but also the reference of the existing gearbox on the vehicle, as two Leon 2.0 TDI from the same year may have been fitted with entirely different gearbox families depending on the original specification.
