Golf 2.0 TDI: from the 110 hp of the first AZV-BKD units to the 184 hp GTD, a variable-geometry turbo throughout the range

Unlike the petrol versions of the Golf, which combine fixed geometry with a wastegate on the less powerful units and variable geometry on the more recent ones, the 2.0 TDI is exclusively diesel across its entire power range — from 110 to 184 hp — and relies exclusively on a variable-geometry turbo. This technical choice requires adjustable vanes and an actuator subjected to intense thermal cycling, making this component particularly sensitive to lubrication quality and EGR circuit fouling.

Identifying the correct turbo by engine code

The 2.0 TDI engine capacity covers several generations of units whose turbos are not interchangeable. The AZV and BKD codes (136–140 hp) belong to a first family with their own manufacturer references, distinct from those of the BMM and BMN codes (140–170 hp). The intermediate units CBAB, CFFB and CJAA (110–140 hp) take a different turbo again, as do the CBBB and CFGB codes (170 hp). The GTD 184 hp version is identified by the codes CUNA, CUPA, CUWA, CYLA, DFMA, DFUA, DGCA and DJGA, which correspond to the most recent generations in the range. Finally, the CRBC and CRLB codes are fitted to the 2.0 TDI 150 hp. Checking the engine code stamped on the block — and not simply the stated power output — is the only reliable way to select the correct reference.

Causes of failure and key checks before replacement

On 2.0 TDI units, turbo failure most commonly presents as a characteristic whistling noise, blue or black exhaust smoke, or the vehicle entering limp-home mode. The most frequent causes are engine oil degradation, fouling of the EGR circuit or DPF affecting airflow, and bearing wear due to insufficient lubrication pressure at start-up. Fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause — blocked oil feed pipe, faulty turbo seal, clogged DPF — risks premature failure once again. All turbos in this range are sold new, complete with manufacturer references and equivalent references.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
