Symptoms of a failing turbo on a Mercedes Sprinter CDI 88 hp
On a Sprinter fitted with the OM 646.984 engine, a turbocharger nearing the end of its life often makes itself known through a noticeable loss of power under load, an unusual whistling noise on acceleration, blue or black exhaust smoke, an illuminated engine warning light, or abnormally high oil consumption. These warning signs should prompt the owner of a van that is regularly driven under load and on long runs to act quickly.

This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: return of the old turbo is required in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, and is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so your Sprinter is never left off the road. Fitting advice for the Sprinter OM 646 turbo
On this engine, premature turbo failure is frequently caused by insufficient lubrication due to incorrect oil grade or missed oil changes, a clogged air filter, or a damaged intercooler allowing contaminants through. Before fitting, check the oil circuit (pressure and cleanliness of hoses), the condition of the air intake, and that there are no leaks on the intake circuit. When starting up for the first time, prime the turbo with oil before the initial engine start, then drive gently for the first few kilometres to protect the new part.
