There are no reconditioned turbos within this range: the new/reconditioned distinction that applies to other engine families simply does not arise here. OM611, OM646 and their variants: why the engine code takes precedence over the stated power output

The Mercedes 2.2 CDI covers a wide range of variants: from 88 hp to 150 hp, with intermediate outputs of 109, 116, 129 and 150 hp depending on the vehicle and series. There are two clearly distinct engine code families: the OM611 block (found on the 211 CDI, 213 CDI, 311 CDI, 313 CDI, 411 CDI and 413 CDI) and the OM611 (found on the 211 CDI, 213 CDI, 311 CDI, 313 CDI, 411 CDI and 413 CDI) and the OM646 family, which comes in numerous variants — OM646, OM646.980, OM646.981, OM646.982, OM 646 DE22LA, OM 646.984, OM 646.985, OM 646.986, OM 646.989, OM 646.990 and OM 646 DE LA. These two families do not share the same turbo references. Within the OM646 family itself, several sub-variants coexist: the same stated power output may correspond to different codes depending on the Sprinter body series (209, 309, 409, 509 or 213, 313, 513, 215, 315, 515), and each code may point to a distinct manufacturer's reference. Power output alone, or the commercial designation, is not sufficient to select the correct turbo: the code stamped on the engine block remains the essential starting point.

Sprinter, Vito, Viano, Classe B: contrasting uses, shared constraints

The vehicles concerned range from the Mercedes Sprinter (a light commercial vehicle frequently running at full load, used intensively on short cycles) to the Mercedes Vito and the Mercedes Viano (mixed passenger and cargo use), through to the Mercedes Classe B. These different uses expose the turbo to varying thermal and lubrication stresses. On heavily loaded commercial vehicles, degraded engine oil and a blocked oil-feed circuit are the primary causes of turbo failure. Symptoms to watch for include blue or grey exhaust smoke, an abnormal whistling noise, a marked loss of power, or the vehicle entering limp-home mode. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and rectify the root cause — worn-out oil, a blocked diesel particulate filter, an air leak in the intake circuit — to prevent premature failure of the new part.
