Diagnose the turbo before replacing it on your BMW Série 5
Before considering a turbocharger replacement on your BMW Série 5 520d, it is essential to confirm that the turbo itself is the faulty component and not a peripheral part. Checking the boost pressure, visually inspecting the axial and radial play of the shaft, and looking for blue or black exhaust smoke will help guide your diagnosis. You should also read any fault codes related to boost pressure or the variable-geometry electronic actuator, which are commonly associated with this type of engine.

Exchange basis and warranty on this Série 5 turbo
This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, return of your old turbocharger is required. Common causes of turbo failure and fitting advice for the 520d
On M47D20 engines fitted to the Série 5, turbo failure is most commonly caused by lubrication issues resulting from poor-quality engine oil, missed oil changes, or a clogged air filter restricting airflow. A damaged intercooler or driving habits that involve prolonged high-revving without a warm-up period can also accelerate wear. Before fitting the new turbo, check the oil circuit, the condition of the hoses, and the cleanliness of the air intake. When starting the engine for the first time, prime the turbo with oil to ensure immediate lubrication from the moment of start-up.
