An icon of luxury 4x4 motoring since 1970, the Range Rover has spanned more than fifty years of history across four generations. Its gearbox is built to last, yet no transmission is entirely immune to wear. EDEN BOITES, specialist in used, reconditioned and exchange gearboxes, shares its expert guidance on diagnosing and restoring the gearbox on your Range Rover.
Manual to automatic: the evolution of the transmission
Like any true off-roader, the Range Rover comes with four-wheel drive, giving superior control and traction on demanding terrain. Up to and including the second generation, it was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox: the manual was fitted, for example, to the V8 Vogue and the DSE Pack. From the third generation onwards, the automatic gearbox became the only option — six-speed as on the TDV8 270 DPF Autobiography, or eight-speed as on the 3.0 D350 Vogue SWB.
Manual or automatic gearbox: what's the difference?
It all comes down to comfort and cost. With a manual gearbox, the driver controls gear changes via the clutch pedal and gear lever, though harsh inputs can accelerate wear. The automatic gearbox, more expensive to buy and to repair, delivers genuine driving comfort. Given that four-wheel drive makes the vehicle more demanding to operate, it explains why automatic gearboxes have become virtually standard on modern Range Rovers.
Warning signs of a failing gearbox
Several symptoms should prompt you to visit a mechanic without delay:
- resistance when changing gear accompanied by crunching noises indicates worn synchroniser rings;
- a continuous droning sound points to damage to one or more bearings supporting the transmission shafts;
- an inability to change gear may stem from a seized selector, a linkage fault, or low oil level.
As soon as these signs appear, an accurate diagnosis is essential. A complete transmission replacement is not always necessary: an oil change or the replacement of specific components (clutch, seals, bearings, synchronisers) is sometimes enough to restore proper operation.
Maintaining your gearbox to delay a breakdown
Robust as it is, the gearbox still requires a degree of care. Anticipate other road users' behaviour to avoid sudden acceleration and harsh braking, and check the oil level and condition regularly. An oil change is recommended every 60,000 kilometres for the automatic gearbox, and from 250,000 kilometres for the manual.
Where to find a replacement gearbox?
Replacing a gearbox can be costly. For an economical solution without compromising on quality, EDEN BOITES offers gearboxes reconditioned by its own specialists: each unit is stripped down, cleaned, inspected, and any faulty parts replaced. If your reference is out of stock, we can also recondition your own gearbox.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the oil in my Range Rover's gearbox?
Allow approximately every 60,000 kilometres for an automatic gearbox, and from 250,000 kilometres for a manual, while checking the oil level and condition regularly.
Can a recent Range Rover have a manual gearbox?
No. The manual gearbox was fitted to the first two generations; from the third generation onwards, only the automatic is offered.
What does a continuous droning noise while driving mean?
This noise often indicates damage to one or more bearings supporting the transmission shafts. A workshop diagnosis will confirm which component is affected.
Do I always need to replace the entire gearbox?
Not necessarily. Depending on the diagnosis, an oil change or the replacement of a few components may be sufficient. A full replacement is only necessary if the gearbox cannot be repaired, or if an exchange unit works out cheaper.
