Moteur Peugeot Expert 2.0 HDi qui casse : quel code moteur commande, échange standard ou reconstruction ?
Moteur Peugeot Expert 2.0 HDi qui casse : quel code moteur commande, échange standard ou reconstruction ? Moteur Peugeot Expert 2.0 HDi qui casse : quel code moteur commande, échange standard ou reconstruction ?

The 2.0 HDi engine fitted to the Peugeot Expert powered hundreds of thousands of light commercial vehicles between 2000 and 2016. When it fails — whether through a snapped con-rod, overheating, loss of compression or persistent smoke — the question is not simply which solution to choose, but first and foremost identifying the correct engine code: AHZ, G6DA, G6DB and G6DC are not interchangeable, and ordering the wrong reference will leave your vehicle off the road for even longer. At EDEN BOITES, we guide you through cross-referencing your VIN, engine plate and service history to ensure you order the exact reconditioned bare engine you need, on an exchange basis.

Why does the Expert's 2.0 HDi engine fail?

The 2.0 HDi (DW10 family) is a robust engine designed for demanding professional use, but it has specific vulnerabilities worth knowing about — both to anticipate failure and to avoid mistaking an engine symptom for a turbo or injection problem.

  • Oil circuit sludging: the narrow-bore oil galleries gradually become blocked on vehicles used predominantly for short urban journeys. Insufficient lubrication causes premature wear of the con-rod bearings, leading to engine failure.
  • Silent overheating: a faulty thermostat or neglected cooling system allows temperatures to rise undetected. The result: a warped cylinder head, blown gaskets and, ultimately, cracks in the block.
  • Timing belt failure: the 2.0 HDi DW10 is an interference engine. If the timing belt snaps — often due to missed Peugeot service intervals — the valves strike the pistons. The block is then beyond repair without a complete regrind.
  • Fuel dilution in the oil: a faulty injector can allow diesel to enter the sump. The oil loses its properties, and the block wears three to four times faster than normal.

How to identify your 2.0 HDi engine code with certainty

This is the step that determines everything that follows. Several codes exist across the same generation of Expert 2.0 HDi, each corresponding to different power outputs, cylinder head sub-variants and internal tolerances. Get this wrong and the rebuilt unit will be unusable.

The three sources you must cross-reference

  1. The physical engine plate: this is stamped directly onto the block, on the timing side or beneath the cylinder head depending on the generation. Read it before any removal, even partial — the plate may be obscured by deposits or wiring.
  2. The VIN (chassis number): this allows you to retrieve the exact manufacturer's record and original engine code. It is stamped on the driver's side sill and appears on the registration document (box E). Pass it to EDEN BOITES when requesting a quote.
  3. The service book or original invoice: some Experts will have had an engine replacement before you acquired the vehicle. The current code may differ from the one on the registration. Always check that all three sources are consistent.

Table of 2.0 HDi references available from EDEN BOITES

Below are the actual engine codes available as reconditioned bare engines on an exchange basis. For Peugeot Expert references, each row corresponds to a distinct block:

Reference / Engine code Engine Years Sale type
AHZ 2.0 HDi 2000-2016 Exchange
G6DA 2.0 HDi 2000-2016 Exchange
G6DB 2.0 HDi 2000-2016 Exchange
G6DC 2.0 HDi — Exchange

The full catalogue of reconditioned Peugeot engines also includes 1.6 HDi and 1.9 D units for other versions of the Expert.

Exchange: how does the process actually work?

All 2.0 HDi engines listed here are sold on an exchange basis. This means you receive the reconditioned bare engine, then return your old block within an agreed timeframe. Return of the old unit — known as the exchange core — is a contractual condition of the service. If the old block is not returned, the corresponding deposit will be charged to you.

Key points to check before returning your block:

  • The returned block must carry the same engine code as the one ordered.
  • It must not show any visible external damage (cracked sump, broken block) that was not declared at the time of ordering.
  • Ancillary components (injectors, alternator, turbo, injection pump) are not returned with the block — the engine is sold bare and must be returned bare.

Bare engine: what does this mean for the garage?

The engines supplied by EDEN BOITES are bare engines. This means ancillary components are not included; the exact list is confirmed on the personalised quote according to your vehicle's configuration. The fitting garage must plan for the transfer or replacement of ancillary parts and should not assume their supply on the basis of this listing. Full details are always confirmed when the personalised quote is drawn up.

Warranty up to 24 months: what EDEN BOITES covers

Depending on the reference ordered, the warranty is up to 24 months on the part. It covers the bare engine itself. To find out the exact warranty period applicable to your engine code, refer to the corresponding product page or ask for clarification when requesting your quote. No ambiguity: the warranty covers the part, under the conditions defined by EDEN BOITES.

Payment and lead times

The current price is shown directly on the product pages — it represents a substantial saving compared with a new manufacturer unit. Payment can be spread over up to 10 instalments. Delivery lead times are confirmed at the time of quoting.

Frequently asked questions — Peugeot Expert 2.0 HDi Engine

How do I know whether my 2.0 HDi engine is an AHZ, G6DA, G6DB or G6DC?

The most reliable method is to read the code stamped directly on the engine block (on the timing side, beneath the cylinder head or on the sump, depending on the year of manufacture). Cross-reference this with your VIN passed to EDEN BOITES: our advisers can confirm the match before any order is placed. The chassis number is the most reliable source if the engine plate is illegible.

My Expert has overheated — is the engine necessarily beyond saving?

Not necessarily, but even a brief overheating episode on a 2.0 HDi DW10 can cause cylinder head warping that is invisible to the naked eye. A cylinder head flatness check and a cylinder-by-cylinder compression test are essential. If compression is uneven or the block shows micro-cracks, replacement on an exchange basis is the most cost-effective and quickest way to get the vehicle back on the road.

Does a snapped timing belt always destroy the 2.0 HDi?

The DW10 is an interference engine: when the timing belt breaks, the valves collide with the pistons. In the vast majority of cases, this failure requires at minimum a cylinder head regrind and piston replacement. Depending on the extent of the internal damage, the repair cost frequently exceeds that of an exchange unit — which is why a rebuilt engine becomes the economically sound choice from this type of failure onwards.

Can I order a 2.0 HDi engine without knowing my engine code?

No. Ordering without a verified engine code risks receiving an incompatible reference. Send EDEN BOITES your VIN and, if possible, a photo of the engine plate. Our advisers carry out the verification before confirming the order. This step is included as part of the quoting service.

What is the difference between an exchange unit and having my own part rebuilt?

With an exchange unit, you receive a reconditioned bare engine that is immediately available, then return your old block afterwards. With a rebuild of your own part, you send in your existing block, which is fully rebuilt and returned to you — with no core exchange. All Peugeot Expert engines listed here are exchange units. If you would prefer to have your own engine rebuilt, please state this explicitly in your quote request.

Does the bare engine include the timing kit, injection system or turbo?

No. The engine is supplied bare. Ancillary components are never included as standard, as the exact list varies according to the vehicle's specific configuration. Full details are always confirmed on the personalised quote. Plan for their inspection or replacement at the time of fitting.

How long does it take to receive a personalised quote?

At EDEN BOITES, a quote is sent within a few hours of receiving your details (model, engine, engine code or VIN). The more complete your request, the faster and more precise the response. Use the online form to submit your engine number or VIN directly.

Can the engine be paid for in instalments?

Yes. EDEN BOITES offers payment in up to 10 instalments. Full details are confirmed at the point of order. This option is available to both private customers and automotive trade professionals.
