BMW diesel from 1999 to 2024: when the sales method depends as much on the part as on the model

With BMW, the sourcing logic varies depending on whether you are looking for an engine, a gearbox or a transfer case. Engines make up the largest family, with units spanning very different generations: the M47 and M57 engines from the 2000s, still very common on the Série 3 and Série 5, sit alongside the N47, N57, B47 and B57 units from the 2010s–2020s, whose architectures and weak points bear no relation to one another. An N47D20 and a B47C20A are both 2.0 diesel engines, yet the two families share no parts whatsoever: the model year and the engine code are the only reliable points of reference.

Rebuild or exchange: how the availability of the part changes everything

For 6-speed manual gearboxes and transfer cases — in particular the xDrive units found on the X1, X3, X4 and X5 — exchange remains the most common solution. However, for certain older or low-volume engines (M57D30 in the 306D1, 306D2 or 306D5 variant, Série 6, Série 7), the stock of fully rebuilt units is more limited. It is precisely in these cases that rebuilding the original part makes sense: the customer sends in their own unit — engine or gearbox — which is reconditioned and then returned. This approach avoids the problem of untraceable references and is well suited to vehicles whose parts are difficult to source on the secondary market.

Série 3 and Série 1 lead the way, but don't overlook the X1 and X3 for transfer cases

The Série 3 and Série 1 account for the largest volume of available references across all part types, reflecting their prominence in the vehicle parc. Four-wheel-drive models — X1, X3, X5 — generate specific demand for transfer cases, a component absent on rear-wheel-drive versions. On these SUVs, a transfer case failure often manifests as juddering on tight corners or an xDrive fault displayed on the dashboard. The 3.0d engine is particularly well represented on these models, under the codes N57D30A, N57D30B or N57D30C depending on the year and power output — three variants that are not interchangeable with one another.
