18 Hyundai engine codes, two decades of transmissions: 2001–2023

Between 2001 and 2023, the Hyundai range underwent several major technical shifts that make identifying the right parts far less straightforward than it might seem. The earliest generations — Galloper, Trajet, Terracan — were built around older-generation diesel units such as the D4BH (2.5 TD) or the J3 CRDi (2.9), paired with 5-speed manual gearboxes and transfer cases specific to the SUVs of that era. From around 2006–2010, the arrival of the ix35, i30, i20 and Santa Fe platforms introduced a new generation of diesel engines — D4EA, D4EB, D4FB, D4FD, D4FE, D4HA — with very different architectures, even where engine capacity is the same: a 2.0 CRDi can thus be fitted with a D4EA, a D4EB or a D4EA depending on the generation and the exact model year of the vehicle.

Identification pitfalls between petrol and diesel generations

On the petrol side, the variety is just as pronounced: the small 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 units span distinct engine families (G3LA, G3LC, G3LF, G4FA, G4LA) that are not interchangeable. The 1.6 GDI (G4FD) and the 1.6 T-GDI (G4FJ) share the same engine capacity but differ fundamentally in their architecture — naturally aspirated versus turbocharged — and therefore in the gearbox that goes with them. The Veloster, the Kona and certain recent versions of the Tucson or i30 in 1.0 T-GDI or 1.6 T-GDI come with 6-speed manual gearboxes where earlier generations of the same model had 5-speed units. The engine code stamped on the block, cross-referenced with the year of first registration, is the only reliable guide for selecting the correct reconditioned gearbox.

Family breakdown: gearboxes, engines, transfer cases

The EDEN BOITES catalogue covering this range is organised into three families: gearboxes account for the vast majority of available parts, all manual (5 or 6 speeds depending on the model and generation). Bare engines cover a selection of petrol and diesel units identified by their engine code — notably G4FD, G4FJ, D4FD, D4FE — principally for the Tucson, i30 and ix35. Transfer cases are aimed at the 4-wheel drive versions of the SUVs (Santa Fe, Tucson, Terracan), where the choice depends as much on the type of main gearbox as on the model year. Two supply methods are available depending on the part: exchange or rebuilding the customer's own unit — a point to confirm at the time of ordering.

    Frequently asked questions

Are your Hyundai parts compatible with my model?

We cover the vast majority of Hyundai engines. To get the exact part, give us your number plate or request an online quote: our advisers confirm compatibility using your registration document.

    Are reconditioned Hyundai parts reliable?

Yes. Every Hyundai part is reconditioned in our workshop, with wear parts replaced, bench-tested and guaranteed for up to 24 months. A reliable and far more affordable alternative to new, starting from a restored original part.

How does the exchange system work for a Hyundai part?

You order your reconditioned Hyundai part, we dispatch it, then you send us back your old unit (the core). We arrange all the transport both ways — you don't have to handle any logistics.

Do you deliver Hyundai parts everywhere, and how quickly?

Yes, we deliver throughout France and Europe. Depending on the availability of the reference, your Hyundai part leaves our workshop quickly, and you can pay in instalments, up to 10 payments.
