The choice between 5 and 6 speeds is not simply a matter of engine capacity: the same 1.6 CRDi (engine code D4FB) can be paired with either, depending on the model and year, and a 2.0 CRDi (D4EA or D4EB) is not necessarily matched to the same gearbox on an ix35 as on a Santa Fe or a Trajet. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier.

Diesel and Petrol: Two Code Families, Two Identification Logics

On the diesel side, CRDi blocks span several generations: the D4EA / D4EB (2.0 CRDi, Tucson, Santa Fe, Terracan), the D4FB / D4FD / D4FE (1.6 and 1.7 CRDi, i30, i40, ix35), and the more recent D4HA (2.0 CRDi, ix35, Tucson). These codes are not interchangeable, and the gearbox associated with each depends directly on the generation of the block.
