The turbo fitted to the Ford Ranger has changed from one generation to the next: the 2.8 Power Stroke, 2.5 TD, 2.2 and 3.2 TDCi share no common turbo components whatsoever

The history of the diesel Ranger can be traced through its turbos. The earlier 2.8 Power Stroke (engine codes HS2.8, SAFA, SA2R, SA2S, SA2W, ENSA) and 2.5 TD 109 (engine codes WLT, WL-T, J97A, P5-AT) belong to a Mazda-Ford engine family that shares no turbo components with later generations. When Ford introduced the 2.2 TDCi (engine codes GBVAJPF, ENPF, GBVAJQW, ENQW, GBVAJQJ, ENQJ) and 3.2 TDCi, the manufacturer references changed entirely: a turbo identified for a 2.8 Power Stroke cannot be fitted to a 2.2 or 3.2 TDCi, even if the quoted power outputs appear similar.

Engine code and manufacturer reference: the two keys to correct identification

On the 3.2 TDCi, several references coexist depending on the vehicle's production phase: the part numbers BK3Q-6K682-NA, NB, NC and their equivalents (RMBK3Q6K682NA) correspond to successive versions of the same variable-geometry turbo, but cannot be substituted for one another without first checking the engine code stamped on the block. The 2.2 TDCi follows the same logic, with references BK3Q-6K682-RB, RC and their variants. For the older engines, the 2.5 TD uses the WL84 and XM34 families, whilst the 2.8 Power Stroke HS2.8 130 hp has its own dedicated references (889939-5001W, FB3Q-6K682-DB/DD/DE/DC/DF).

Failure causes specific to the Ranger's working conditions

Used in demanding conditions — maximum load, off-road tracks, frequent towing — the Ranger places considerable strain on its turbo bearings. Engine oil degradation and extended oil-change intervals are the most common causes of turbo failure across all generations. On the 2.2 and 3.2 TDCi, progressive fouling of the intake circuit (EGR, blocked diesel particulate filter) restricts airflow and causes the CHRA to overheat. Classic symptoms — blue smoke on a cold start, whistling under acceleration, loss of power under load — generally point to bearing wear or a sealing failure. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and rectify the root cause: a contaminated oil circuit or an air leak in the intake will destroy a new turbo just as quickly. All turbos listed here are new, with manufacturer references and cross-references verified against the engine code.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford Ranger Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford Ranger Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
