From 2010 to 2018: three gearbox architectures coexist on the A1 depending on the engine

On the first-generation A1 (2010–2018), the gearbox is not a single choice: it depends directly on the engine fitted. The entry-level small petrol units — 1.2 TFSI (CBZA, CBZB) and 1.0 TFSI (CHZB, DKRF, DKLA) — are fitted exclusively with a 5-speed manual. The 1.4 TFSI (CAXA, CAVG, CTHG, CZCA, CZEA) is the most widely represented engine in the range: it can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a dual-clutch S tronic 7 — the two versions are not interchangeable. On the diesel side, the 1.6 TDI (CAYB, CAYC) is the only engine to offer three distinct gearbox types: 5-speed manual, S tronic 6, or S tronic 7. The 2.0 TDI (CFHD) is fitted solely with a 6-speed manual.

S tronic 6 and S tronic 7: two dual-clutch gearboxes, two different designs

The S tronic 6 (DQ250) is a wet dual-clutch gearbox, used on certain variants of the 1.6 TDI. The S tronic 7 (DQ200) uses a dry dual-clutch and is found on the 1.4 TFSI and on other variants of the 1.6 TDI. These two families share neither architecture nor references: the engine code stamped on the block and the fuel type are the first things to check before placing any order. The DQ200 is known for juddering at low urban speeds, a symptom that can precede a mechanical failure of the gearbox itself, separate from the mechatronic unit. S tronic gearboxes are sold without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual clutch included.

Identifying the correct reference: engine code first

For manual gearboxes, the most common source of confusion involves the 1.6 TDI and the 1.4 TFSI: both can take a 5- or 6-speed gearbox, but the bell housings, gear ratios and reference codes differ. The three- or four-letter engine code, visible on the block, remains the most reliable way to identify the correct unit and avoid ordering errors.
