Three distinct gearboxes for two engine codes: what the urban use of the A1 1.6 TDI means at the point of replacement

The A1 1.6 TDI is primarily a city and suburban car: the clutch is constantly under load, gear changes are short and frequent stops are the norm. This pattern of use wears the transmission differently from a road-going saloon, and it is at the point of replacement that the breadth of the range becomes a trap. On the 2010–2018 generation, the 1.6 TDI is built around two engine codes — CAYB and CAYC — and can be fitted with three gearboxes that bear no direct relation to the stated power output: a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed S tronic or a 7-speed S tronic. These three transmissions are not interchangeable.

S tronic 6 and S tronic 7: two dual-clutch gearboxes with different architectures

The S tronic 6 (DQ250) uses a wet clutch, while the S tronic 7 (DQ200) uses a dry clutch — two mechanically incompatible families. The DQ200 is known to be sensitive in heavy urban use: dry clutches cope poorly with repeated low-speed manoeuvring, which is precisely the dominant condition on the A1. These gearboxes are offered without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly included. To identify the gearbox fitted to the vehicle, the code stamped on the transmission plate — not the engine code alone — is the essential reference, as CAYB and CAYC may have been paired with different transmissions depending on the year and trim level.
