Three gearbox architectures for the same 1.6 TDI: what urban use of the A1 demands at the point of diagnosis

Used predominantly in short urban cycles — frequent starts, constant clutch engagement, lower gears permanently selected — the A1 1.6 TDI accumulated a very specific pattern of transmission wear between 2010 and 2018. Depending on the version and year, this diesel was fitted with three distinct architectures: a 5-speed manual, a DSG 6 and a DSG 7. These are not interchangeable, and the recorded mileage does not always reflect the true condition of the gearbox on a vehicle subjected to intensive urban use.

CAYB and CAYC: two engine codes to check before placing any order

The 1.6 TDI in the A1 comes in two engine codes: CAYB and CAYC. These two codes correspond to different engine configurations and determine which gearbox is associated with them. Identifying the code — visible on the engine identification plate or in the manufacturer's documentation — is an essential first step before selecting any part.

DSG on a city-car diesel: a specific point to watch

The DSG 6 and DSG 7 versions are sold without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch included. On an A1 used in urban conditions, the DSG is subjected to repeated low-speed stress that accelerates wear on the dual-clutch and differential. The 5-speed manual, for its part, displays more typical symptoms: stiff or impossible gear changes, noise in gear, and excessive play at the gearbox output.
